Daimler-Benz introduced the W113 ‘Pagoda‘ SL series in 1963 with the 230 SL to replace both the 300 and 190 SL models. The new SL presented a synthesis of the two previous models and set new standards in driving dynamics and safety. It was the first sports car ever with a rigid passenger cell along with front and rear crumple zones. And with its distinctive concave-shaped hard top, this new roadster was quickly nicknamed the ‘Pagoda‘.
The 230 SL was replaced by the 250 SL in 1967 and then the 280 SL in 1968. Production of the ‘Pagoda’ series SL ended in 1971 when Mercedes-Benz presdented its successor model, the R107-series SL.
