Between 1977 and 1980, Mercedes-Benz trainees participated in six fuel-economy competitions, having designed and built the relevant cars themselves. With this economobile, 17-year-old Volker Schramm won the Kilometer Marathon in Hockenheim in 1980. The projected fuel consumption: one litres of diesel for 639 miles (2418 mpg) – at an average speed of 13 mph.
