At the beginning, travelling by car was an elitist pleasure. This changed in 1895 when the first motorised omnibus was presented, made by Carl Benz, which enabled larger numbers of people to travel by motor coach. Today, buses are an indispensable part of local and long-distance passenger transport. Experience the history of public transport in the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

You start your discovery tour in the 19th century. At that time, the horse was still the most used form of transportation.

Legend 1: Pioneers – The Invention of the Automobile.

Working independently, Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz were the brains behind the first automobiles, which turned their wheels first in 1886. A combination of their brilliant inventions and the input of equally inspired partners such as Wilhelm Maybach helped to get the world on the move.

Legends 2: Mercedes – Birth of the Brand.

Due to his premature death, Gottlieb Daimler does not witness one of the most outstanding designs Maybach produced for the joint company. The first Mercedes generates great excitement at the “Nice Race Week” in March 1901. It is a powerful, lightweight vehicle with a low centre of gravity and stands out from all previously built cars.

With the invention of the automobile, Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz newly defined mobility and also travel. In the early days of the new means of transport, however, travel was an elite pleasure, a privilege of the well-to-do upper classes. In the following years, the bus democratized motorized travel, and large groups of the population were able to enjoy the new dimension of mobility.

Collection 2: Gallery of Carriers.

As the inventor of the truck and the van, Mercedes-Benz revolutionized goods transport. Gottlieb Daimler built the first truck in 1896. In the same year, Carl Benz developed the first van, called “delivery vehicle” or “business vehicle” at the time. With their inventions, they laid the foundation stone for the motorized transportation of goods.

Legend 5: Visionaries – Safety and the Environment.

In the development of new models, Mercedes-Benz engineers have by tradition accorded high priority to safety and the environment at all times. After the invention of the automobile in 1886, it was initially a question of giving the new means of transport operational reliability and easy handling.

The Mercedes-Benz brand and its predecessors have always been synonymous for out-of-the-ordinary automobiles, which underline their owners’ demanding personalities.
