Mercedes-Benz DB 601 A aircraft engine.

The DB 601 was the world’s first production engine with direct gasoline injection. The fuel/air mixture was not produced in a carburetor, as was customary at the time, but directly in the cylinder, thereby boosting output. In 1939, a Me 209 with such an engine reached a speed of 469 mph – a record that remained unbroken for 30 years.
