Motorsport at Mercedes-Benz.

Motorsport history has been fascinating since 1894. Mercedes-Benz has shaped this unique history more comprehensively than any other automobile brand in the world. The web special shows the highlights of the past years as well as unique moments of the Mercedes-Benz Classic Insight “125 Years of Motorsport” on the legendary English racetrack in Silverstone.

List of episodes.

Episode 1.

Unique success story since 1894.

In July 1894, the world’s first competitive Horseless Carriages Contest takes place from Paris to Rouen. This is the initial spark that kindles Mercedes-Benz’s successful motorsport history as two of the winning cars are powered by engines developed by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. For 125 years, engines and vehicles made by Mercedes-Benz and its predecessor brands have secured countless triumphs.

Episode 2.

Victories in the king’s class.

Formula One is known as the premier class of motorsport. And Mercedes-Benz is one of the most successful brands in this top racing series. Today’s successes enjoy an excellent tradition. One could even say that the will to compete is in the genes of the brand as Daimler engines lay the foundation for success at the world’s first automotive race held from Paris to Rouen in 1894. Other important triumphs soon follow. Even after the turn of the century, predecessor brands Benz and Mercedes and – as of 1926 – the Mercedes-Benz brand continue to dominate the international racing scene.

Episode 3.

Champion of the marathon discipline.

Be it 24 hours or 1,000 miles: races covering particularly long distances are extremely challenging in motorsports. The performance of the competition vehicles when driven to the limit is just as decisive here as the ability of the drivers to cope with the constant pressure. This is what makes competitions of this kind the marathon discipline of motorsports.

Episode 4.

Motorsports jewels.

We recall twelve star-spangled moments in the unprecedented history of the brand’s competitive involvement since 1894: in 1909, the Benz 200 PS car with Victor Hémery at the wheel was the first combustion engine vehicle to reach the magic 200 km/h mark. In the USA the Benz 200 PS record car was nicknamed the “Blitzen Benz”. The thunderous sound of the fastest land vehicle of its time was generated by the 21.5-litre engine.

Motorsport history is the brand history (Part 1).

Who is the best? This gripping theme that makes competition so exciting provides the spark that has written the history of motorsport. The ball started rolling on 22 July 1894 at the world's first automobile race from Paris to Rouen ─ a stretch of over 126 kilometres.

This was also the beginning of the unique motorsports history of Mercedes-Benz.

Episode 7.

Motorsport history is the brand history (Part 2).

Open to alternatives since 1894: an innovative force and an open mind towards what is new have formed part of Mercedes-Benz’s motorsports history from the outset. History’s first ever automotive competition 125 years ago was already a battle of drive systems. Back then, vehicles featuring Daimler combustion engines prevailed.  At the end of 2019, the brand will launch in Formula E.
