Design of commercial vehicles.

Designers at Daimler AG are also responsible for the commercial vehicle design of the European Mercedes-Benz range and vehicles built in Brazil under the same brand name as well as Freightliner and Western Star in the USA, Mitsubishi-Fuso in Japan, Bharat-Benz in India and Evobus. Global thinking is paramount here, because designers must generate synergies. Even if each brand needs its own identity, individual components must remain compatible.

Designers are also responsible for van design and the V-Class plays a particular role here. The V-Class is firstly available for passenger transport and meets all requirements for a Mercedes-Benz vehicle. The model series is not only smart but its design also makes it very emotional. Then there is the Vito commercial vehicle. The body of both models is identical: pure and sensual in form. The interior is what distinguishes the V-Class from the Vito: modern luxury for the V-Class and modern purity for the Vito.

Design: Commercial vehicle and vans. The horizon of designers stretches out into the next generation, it goes as far as the Future Truck 2025, Urban eTruck, Vision Van and Future Bus.

Thinking in modular concepts.

The toughest challenge is to think in modular concepts, in order to apply these around the world and still be able to change the vehicles’ appearance. For instance, the Atego built in Germany looks different to its counterpart built in Brazil. However, the horizon of designers in Sindelfingen does not end at the Mercedes-Benz models Actros, Atego, Antos, Arocs, Unimog, Zetros and Econic, but already stretches out into the next generation. In other words, it goes as far as the Future Truck 2025, the Urban eTruck, the Vision Van and the Future Bus.

The spectacular commercial vehicle concept of the Future Truck 2025 – which has already been tested and is ready for operation –, which aims to bring autonomous driving to overcrowded roads, clearly demonstrates the approach of the successful design philosophy of sensual purity. Designers sought a solution for autonomous driving within the context of efficiency, operating costs and safety. They were forced to create a new design to express a new concept.

Future Truck 2025.

The Future Truck 2025 initially hides its face: at standstill the truck resembles an anonymous sculpture. The radiator grille lights up in white upon starting the engine. The light then changes to light blue once the truck switches to autonomous driving mode. This light pulsates like a heartbeat. The philosophy of sensual purity is very evident here: the dimensions are defined by only a few lines, by modifying surfaces, dimensions and the tension. Elements at the front were also removed to lend the Future Truck 2025 a rounder shape.

The Urban eTruck defines the latest developments in all-electric vehicles in the heavy short-radius distribution sector and beyond, it embodies the visionary design idiom of Mercedes-Benz. It is just as innovative as its electric drive. The contours of the driver’s cab are sleek and fluid with minimal detailing and no visible joints. The sensual contouring of the lines provides an exciting contrast to the highly technical design features.

Vision Van.

With the Vision Van, the company presents a revolutionary van study for the urban environment. It is an exciting overall composition of emotion and intelligence which stands for the successful application of the Sensual Purity design language. The showcar is hot and cool. Its sensual surfaces and perfect proportions contrast with very clear forms and that emphasises the design and its function as a platform for a highly efficient future logistics concept. The highly complex technology is both in the exterior and in the interior reduced to the max and therefore extremely user friendly but without ignoring the high aim of aesthetics and beauty.

The Future Bus with its spectacular technology shows what urban public transport will look like in the future. Both exterior and interior design of the semi-automated city bus break completely new ground and nevertheless bear the signature of the Mercedes-Benz design philosophy. The harmonious lines and asymmetrical contours of the exterior take their lead from city architecture and the bus fully lives up to its name. The same applies to the interior, the open-plan design which is inspired by city squares and parks.

4 Angaben zu Kraftstoffverbrauch, Stromverbrauch und CO₂-Emissionen sind vorläufig und wurden vom Technischen Dienst für das Zertifizierungsverfahren nach Maßgabe des WLTP-Prüfverfahrens ermittelt und in NEFZ-Werte korreliert. Eine EG-Typgenehmigung und Konformitätsbescheinigung mit amtlichen Werten liegen noch nicht vor. Abweichungen zwischen den Angaben und den amtlichen Werten sind möglich.
