Sharpened “senses” smooth the way for the vehicle of tomorrow.

More and more vehicles are pushing their way onto the motorways: cars, vans and heavy goods vehicles. And even more cars are joining them in the acceleration lane. Merging, accelerating, braking – and then changing lanes. The journey is tiring and the distances between the vehicles are short - often too short. If someone then brakes, a rear-end collision can be hard to avoid. Because the drivers have to react in a split second. And they do not always do that. Humans are not machines.

DISTRONIC PLUS with Steer Assist monitors both longitudinal and sideways movements.

Insufficient distance and therefore – if the worst comes to the worst – braking too late are some of the most common causes of accidents all over the world – both on motorways and on major or minor roads.

DISTRONIC PLUS also supports the driver to keep in lane.

Distance on the street - semi-autonomously driving.

DISTRONIC PLUS supports the driver in maintaining the distance to the vehicle ahead. This minimises the risks from short distances between vehicles, abrupt stops in the traffic, or simply from brief phases of inattention. Particularly on long journeys and when following vehicles in congested traffic, the assistant gives you a first feel of what semi-autonomous driving is like. “Introducing DISTRONIC was a turning point, because for the first time it realised a distance function on an automatic basis”, says Ralf Guido Herrtwich, Head of Driver Assistance and Chassis Systems at Daimler Group Research and Advance Development.

Staying on track.

Progressive though the function of DISTRONIC PLUS is, it is simple to explain: the system brakes when necessary. And it accelerates again to a pre-set desired speed as soon as that is possible. Steer Assist also helps the driver to keep in lane. With the help of a stereo camera the system utilises clearly visible roadside markings or, at low speeds, utilises the vehicle in front as a point of reference. On straight roads and even in slight bends, it generates steering torque which can help to keep the vehicle in the centre of the lane. DISTRONIC PLUS with Steer Assist is available for the C-, E-, V- and S-Class and also for the CLS, GLC, GLE and the Mercedes-AMG GT. However, the system is only one of about a dozen examples for extending and sharpening the “senses” of the increasingly intelligent vehicle.

The driver assistance system DISTRONIC PLUS guarantees a safe distance and keeps the vehicle in lane.

On a technical level the new SUV clearly makes its mark with the excellent standard of safety that is a brand hallmark, featuring state-of-the-art assistance systems and outstanding energy efficiency.

Minimising the risk of rear-end collisions automatically.

Just how important it is to have a vehicle that anticipates and intervenes in an emergency is shown by the performance of COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS, which Mercedes-Benz has introduced in all model series (exceptions: G-Class and SL). Based on the prognosis of accident researchers, the assistant is able to reduce the number of serious accidents by up to 30 percent. COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS works unobtrusively in the background – just like all the other Mercedes-Benz assistance systems. Its radar sensor system constantly monitors the driving but the assistant is only noticeable if there is a risk of collision.

Reliability in the background – intervention only in an emergency.

If the vehicle's distance to the vehicle ahead is too short, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS gives a warning in the form of a red triangle in the instrument cluster. If the distance to the vehicle ahead drops below the safety threshold for several seconds, the assistant gives you an audible warning and also increases the braking pressure to support the driver's braking. More importantly: if the driver does not take action, the system even automatically performs brake application.

COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST combines radar-assisted distance warning, braking support and autonomous partial braking.

This significantly reduces the vehicle speed straight away. If a collision is no longer avoidable, the effects of the accident will be reduced considerably.
