The Internet of Things (IoT) speaks via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. This is too energy-intensive for classic external communication in the form of posters. The University of Washington has solved this problem with so-called “backscattering”. The data of the posters “jumps” onto existing FM broadcast signals. When tuning one’s radio into the frequency upon which the data is “piggybacking”, then the advert speaks when it is nearby.
