Spielberg: Race 1

Four drivers racing with the Mercedes-AMG DTM Team came home in the top seven in the race that marks the mid-way point of the 2015 season at Spielberg. Pascal Wehrlein (gooix Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) was second in this ninth fixture of 18 this season which has enabled him to pull out a lead of eight points on Audi driver Mattias Ekström in the DTM drivers' standings. In addition, gooix/Original-Teile Mercedes-AMG head the team rankings with a lead of 33 points. 

Strong team result

Wehrlein's fellow Mercedes-Benz drivers, Paul Di Resta (Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) and Christian Vietoris (Original-Teile Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) also finished in the top four in the race by placing third and fourth respectively. British driver Gary Paffett (EURONICS Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) in seventh position rounded off a strong team result for the Mercedes-AMG DTM Team. 

Bad luck for Robert Wickens

Daniel Juncadella (PETRONAS Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) placed eleventh in this race that marks the mid-point of the 2015 season. Maximilian Götz (Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) and Austrian driver Lucas Auer (BWT Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) booked P20 and P21 respectively. Canadian Robert Wickens (SILBERPFEIL Energy Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) did not finish.

"That was a good race. I'm highly satisfied with the job done by my team, especially when you consider that I had to abandon Friday's free practice session after just a few minutes because I had a problem with the car. This meant that I didn't have a lot of time to get the setup right on my car, but we still managed to make the best of the situation. The partnership with my team is going really well, and I want to make a point of thanking everyone involved."

"That was a relatively lonely third place for me. I had to concentrate on doing my job, and it all worked out well. Our car is very fast here, and I'm optimistic about my choice of tyres for tomorrow. The two guys ahead pulled away from me today, but we're in a good position for tomorrow. It's going to be a long day, but hopefully we'll be up near the front again. The car has been very good to drive so far this weekend. Many thanks to my team for all their hard work."

"Basically, this has been a good weekend for us so far. It already got off to a good start on Friday. Then, overnight, we made a change to the car which paid off for us. We put in a good qualifying performance, and the race itself went correspondingly well. After a good start, I came under relatively strong pressure from Augusto Farfus, but my car was strong enough to hold off the challenge. The bottom line is that we've scored points yet again."

"That was a hard, close race. Unfortunately, Robert had a problem at the start and so, I lost a bit of time behind him before I got past. That meant that I had no DRS behind Farfus, which enabled Mattias Ekström to get past me - I couldn't do anything to fend him off. After that, I had a decent battle for position with Marco Wittmann. I pulled out a lead of one second on him, and then I was just pushing flat out the whole race, trying to maintain the gap. P7 is okay based on the race, but the pace is there, so let's hope for more tomorrow."

"I had a lot of fun today. The first lap was excellent. I overtook two cars at the start, and then two more on Turns 3 and 4. But then I found myself on the outside and lost three places. So that was pretty unlucky. I was involved in a lot of wheel-to-wheel action and had a minor bump with Bruno. I also got hit from behind, which left my car slightly damaged. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to catch up with the guys ahead of me and finished one place outside the points. A pity."

"I got away well and gained a few positions on the first two laps. I thought that I could attack after that, but unfortunately, I had problems with the rear brakes, which is why I lost the car and had to drive through the gravel bed. That cost me quite a few places. Consequently, I needed to close the gap again, but unfortunately, it wasn't possible any more. We now need to improve for tomorrow and then strike back." 

Lucas Auer (20, Austria):

"That was a feeble race. Qualifying was the key factor. Unfortunately, there's no home advantage in the DTM. Still, racing here in Spielberg in front of my home fans is great fun, and I'm really enjoying it. We now have to work hard to ensure that we make progress in the second race tomorrow." 

Robert Wickens (26, Canada):

"I don't know what happened. For whatever reason, I just had no grip at the rear, which is why we had to retire the car. I still have no idea what the cause was. The team is working on it. We didn't have the problem on the way to the grid, but it was there as soon as the race began. It's unfortunate." 

Ulrich Fritz, Head of Mercedes-AMG DTM:

"A double podium and four drivers in the top seven were the maximum today and a great result for us at the same time, for sure. Of course, it feels good to lead the drivers' and team championship mid-season and is a well-deserved reward for the work done by the entire team. However, the field is very tightly bunched, and it could all change again on Sunday. Considering how close things were today, we've got a tough task ahead of us again tomorrow."
