Zandvoort: Race 1

The DTM is at the Dutch dune circuit in Zandvoort this weekend to contest races seven and eight of the season. Mercedes-AMG driver Pascal Wehrlein (gooix Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) finished the first race of the weekend in tenth place.

Attack at the end of the race

British driver Gary Paffett (EURONICS Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) crossed the finish line in eleventh position behind Wehrlein. The 2005 champion was in fifth place until just before the finish and had a chance to improve even more. He was only about three and a half seconds off the lead at that point. However, Paffett went off track while battling for fourth place and dropped back down the field behind Wehrlein.

Bad luck for Robert and Paul

Christian Vietoris (Original-Teile Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) finished the race in P12. Maximilian Götz (Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM), Daniel Juncadella (PETRONAS Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) und Lucas Auer (BWT Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) placed 15th, 16th and 17th respectively. Paul Di Resta (Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) retired from the race during the initial start phase after a crash. Robert Wickens (SILBERPFEIL Energy Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) parked up in the pits during the closing third segment of the race with damage to his car after a contact.

Comments after the race

Pascal Wehrlein (20, Germany):

  • P10
  • Car number: 94
  • Team: gooix/Original-Teile Mercedes-AMG (Mercedes-AMG DTM Team HWA)
  • Car: gooix Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM

"My start wasn't ideal. After that, my speed was good. I had a minor collision with Adrien Tambay, which from my perspective was unnecessary. Apart from that, I was satisfied with my race, though obviously not with the result."

Gary Paffett (34, England):

  • P11
  • Car number: 2
  • Team: EURONICS/BWT Mercedes-AMG (Mercedes-AMG DTM Team ART)
  • Car: EURONICS Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM

"It was a good start. I got alongside Augusto on the outside of Turn 1, but he got pushed and I got pushed wide and, unfortunately, I didn't gain any places. I stayed in P5. I managed to stay in his DRS which was the aim. The aim was to try and get him at the end, because he started to struggle with the tyres a bit. I had the DRS and he moved to the inside for Turn 7, braked a bit early, and I just misjudged his braking point and just touched the back, and that was it. It was unfortunate, really. I wasn't trying to overtake him there I was just trying to get close. It was a shame."

Christian Vietoris (26, Germany):

  • P12
  • Car number: 8
  • Team: gooix/Original-Teile Mercedes-AMG (Mercedes-AMG DTM Team HWA)
  • Car: Original-Teile Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM

"This is turning out to be a tough weekend which got off to a difficult start yesterday. Unfortunately, it just carried on in the same vein today. Positions ten, eleven and twelve aren't exactly what we set out to achieve, especially after being on such a high at the Norisring. Anyway, tomorrow's another day. We still have time to work on the car, and then we'll be back on the attack."

Maximilian Götz (29, Germany):

  • P15
  • Car number: 84
  • Team: PETRONAS Mercedes-AMG (Mercedes-AMG DTM Team Mücke)
  • Car: Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM

"After being handed a three-place grid penalty from the Norisring, we managed to save a set of new tyres in qualifying today for use tomorrow. That's why I started from the back. I managed to gain several positions at the start and then to keep up with the drivers just in front. Unfortunately, I seem to have booked the P15 slot, and I'd like to get away from that. But we're now going to sort things out, and I'll be attacking tomorrow under better circumstances. The race speed is certainly there. If I can just acquit myself better in qualifying, I should be able to get more out of the race itself."

Daniel Juncadella (24, Spain):

  • P16
  • Car number: 12
  • Team: PETRONAS Mercedes-AMG (Mercedes-AMG DTM Team Mücke)
  • Car: PETRONAS Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM

"That was an interesting race. The first lap was a bit wild. I tackled things more calmly, though, and my pace was really strong after the safety car. I was faster than the drivers in front of me. It feels good to be quick in the race. However, we must get to grips with qualifying. I was blocked this morning, but if we have a little more luck in qualifying and can start in the top 5 or top 10, we can then achieve better results."

Lucas Auer (20, Austria):

  • P17
  • Car number: 22
  • Team: EURONICS/BWT Mercedes-AMG (Mercedes-AMG DTM Team ART)
  • Car: BWT Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM

"That was a poor race. We need to check and see if there was something wrong with the car. It felt as though something was broken. There is a bit of a question mark in this area. We need to analyse this in time for tomorrow's race."

Robert Wickens (26, Canada):

  • Retired
  • Car number: 6
  • Team: SILBERPFEIL Energy Mercedes-AMG (Mercedes-AMG DTM Team HWA)
  • Car: SILBERPFEIL Energy Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM

"I don't know what happened at the start. I was hit from behind. There was so much damage on the car that I had no speed, and we had to retire. It's a pity. It's been a bad day and a bad weekend so far."

Paul Di Resta (29, Scotland):

  • retired
  • Car number: 3
  • Team: SILBERPFEIL Energy Mercedes-AMG (Mercedes-AMG DTM Team HWA)
  • Car: Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM

"It was a fairly hard hit. Unfortunately I picked up a bit of debris. I just couldn't turn the steering wheel, whatever happened, and hit Robert. The car is a bit of a mess. With a bit of luck, the guys will be able to repair it for tomorrow, and I want to thank them in advance for all their hard work. I hope I can achieve a decent points-scoring finish tomorrow to express my appreciation."

Ulrich Fritz, Head of Mercedes-AMG DTM:

"Of course, today's result is disappointing, but we knew this weekend would be difficult. Unfortunately, some of our cars were damaged, so our crew has a lot to do this evening. Still, we'll continue to work just as hard as before and see if we can do better tomorrow."
