Rhineland charm à la Goodwood.
It is a hot Sunday afternoon, and across the broad expanse of lawn in front of the orangery of the castle a young woman in a pastel-coloured dress is pushing a vintage pram past lovingly polished classic cars. There is a mixture of engine oil and French fries in the air. Anyone who thinks this is the backdrop to a film set is mistaken. For what is on offer for the visitors on this first weekend in August in the grounds of the Rhineland Schloss Dyck are the 9th Classic Days – the German equivalent of the British Goodwood Festival of Speed. The Classic Days have become popular with car enthusiasts and collectors from all over Europe. Brand variety is the name of the game on the miscanthus field which is more than 1.3 kilometres long:
Visitors and classic car clubs are presenting their treasures here and creating one of the finest and largest temporary open-air museums in the world. Everywhere in the extensive grounds around the moated castle there are themed islands such as the classic cars exhibited as 'Jewels in the Park'.
