  • Mercedes-Benz W 196 R Formula 1 racing car, 1954.

Developed as an entirely new design in response to the displacement limit of 2.5 litres imposed by the racing regulations, the W 196 R Formula 1 racing car of 1954 marked the successful return of Mercedes-Benz to Grand Prix motorsport after the Second World War. The variant with a streamlined body was complemented by an open-wheel version more suitable for winding circuits. Juan Manuel Fangio won the Formula 1 world championship in the new Silver Arrow in 1954 and 1955.
