Future of mobility – 1902 and today.

40 hp Mercedes-Simplex and Mercedes-Benz Concept EQ: pioneer of a new era of mobility.

The meeting of the two automotive game changers.

Although there are more than 110 years between the two models, each of the vehicles stands for the road to the future of mobility. Both are real eye catchers, both are undisputed pioneers for new eras with regard to mobility and innovation – and nevertheless both could hardly be more different: the revolutionary Mercedes-Benz Concept EQ and the Mercedes-Simplex 40 hp Mercedes-Simplex from 1903. The meeting of the two automotive game changers in California caused a sensation amongst automotive enthusiasts from all over the world.

Innovative technology.

As the Concept EQ and the 40 hp Mercedes-Simplex coasted over the roads of Silicon Valley side by side, many passers-by initially had no idea where to look first. In one of them a large-volume four-cylinder engine from a long-gone era chugged away charmingly, whilst beneath the bonnet of the Concept EQ two electric motors ensured a silent drive and an impressive range of up to 500 kilometres. At the start of the early 20th century the Mercedes-Simplex model family brought with it innovative technology as it signalled the end of motorised carriages. Today the Concept EQ stands for a fundamental rethink of the car of the future.

EQ – the brand for innovative electric mobility.

At the end of 2016 the Mercedes-Benz Concept EQ celebrated its spectacular premiere at the Paris Motor Show. The near-series study also created a stir at the Consumer Electronics Show CES in January 2017. EQ stands for 'Electric Intelligence' and is derived from the Mercedes-Benz brand values 'Emotion' and 'Intelligence'. Two letters which point the way to electric mobility. The goal for the near future: attractive and high-performance battery-electric cars with the Mercedes-Benz brand values. The Concept EQ is kicking things off. It takes up the forms of a sporty SUV coupé and combines them with a new digital design idiom.

The innovative permanent all-wheel drive vehicle is powered by two electric motors with a system performance of up to 300 kW. The Concept EQ also combines hallmark Mercedes-Benz strengths with regard to safety, comfort, functionality and connectivity with the brand values emotion and intelligence. It is a concept that is already giving an insight into battery-electric drive systems in various segments which will be usable in different models in the future and which will then be suitable for SUVs, saloons, coupés and further model series. In future, all vehicles from Mercedes-Benz with a purely battery-electric drive will bear the designation 'EQ'.

Innovation and technology in Silicon Valley.

With this vision in mind there could not have been a more suitable location for the encounter between the Mercedes-Benz Concept EQ and the 40 hp Mercedes-Simplex than Silicon Valley. The region south of San Francisco stands for innovation and creativity all over the world. The proportion of hybrid models and purely electrically driven vehicles on the roads is already high here – and increasing sharply. So there is already a great deal of interest here in the Mercedes-Benz Concept EQ. There is no better proof of how successful a holistic, systematically implemented concept on the basis of innovative technology can be than the 40 hp Mercedes-Simplex, which once heralded in a new era of mobility.

High performance.

Back in 1901 the predecessor of the 40 hp Mercedes-Simplex 40 caused a sensation at the 'Semaine de Nice'. The event was not merely one of the outstanding global motorsport events of the day, it was also a major podium for innovations in automotive technology. In March 1901, Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft used this important stage to present a new high-performance car which differed fundamentally from the vehicles known to date: the 35 hp Mercedes. This first vehicle with the name Mercedes not only dominated the Nice Week of 1901; it simultaneously signalled the end of the vehicle designs which had been customary until then, and still bound to the tradition of motorised carriages, so ever since it has been known as the first modern car.

Sportiness and luxury.

The values of sportiness and luxury were henceforth directly linked with the new Mercedes brand. The 35 hp Mercedes and its direct successor, the 40 hp Mercedes-Simplex launched in 1902 ensured that in the first decade of the 20th century internal combustion engines were finally able to assert themselves in the competition for different drive types. Back then the cars with a combustion engine were competing not only with user-friendly battery-electric vehicles, but also with powerful steam-powered cars. The historical development back then has direct parallels with the present day. The drive types of the future are what it is all about in 2017, too. Internal combustion engines, hybrid vehicles, electric cars – all are jostling for their position as the mobility form of the future.

Electrifying.

As was the case with the 35 hp Mercedes and the 40 hp Mercedes-Simplex at the start of the 20th century, the Mercedes-Benz Concept EQ impresses with its specially developed vehicle architecture, which is systematically configured for the potential of the innovative drive system. Where design, connectivity and automation are concerned, it is already providing insights into the future of mobility in everyday life. For this reason alone the meeting of the generations between the 40 hp Mercedes-Simplex and the Mercedes-Benz Concept EQ in Silicon Valley could not have been more fitting.
