The Monterey Car Week has long since been much more than just the most exclusive classic car event in the world. At no other event is the scenery so perfect or the spectrum from the day before yesterday to tomorrow so wide – the best example: the spectacular models by Mercedes-Benz.

Incredible views of the ocean.

For 51 weeks a year, Pebble Beach is a quiet, relaxed luxury enclave not far from the small Californian city of Monterey. When one of the big golf tournaments isn’t taking place in Spanish Bay or Pebble Beach Links, people here like to keep themselves to themselves. Entry to the thickly wooded area on the cool Pacific is only permitted to inhabitants that display a corresponding badge on their radiator grille, otherwise you have to pay $10.25 and you can at least travel down a portion of 17 Mile Drive; always torn between incredible views of the ocean, villas, dune scenery and bustling golfers. But once a year the peace is broken, as usually the third week of August means the car is in charge and more than 100,000 car fans can be seen in the region around Monterey.


Audacious rockets.

The 1930s was the time of daring men in their audacious rockets. It was all about technology, speed and setting one new record after the other, which posed huge challenges to the development departments. The high-speed record by racing driver Rudolf Caracciola of January 1938 stood for almost 80 years. On the section of the A5 motorway between Darmstadt and Frankfurt, in the early hours of the morning, Caracciola reached a unique 432.70 km/h in a Mercedes-Benz W 125 – until the autumn of 2017 this was the fastest anyone had ever driven on a public road.

Record for eternity.

The spectacular concept study of the Mercedes-Benz EQ Silver Arrow reminds us of this record – which can be admired for the first time at Pebble Beach 2018. The electrical Monoposto borrows significantly from the racing cars of the 30s in terms of design and, with its 550 kW / 750 PS electric drive, alongside an 80 kWh battery pack, spans the range of models of the new Mercedes-Benz EQ brand. “The EQ Silver Arrow show car is designed for acceleration and driving pleasure, embodies progressive luxury and gives an outlook to the future of our design,” explains the chief design officer at Mercedes-Benz Gorden Wagener. The main topic of the modern Silver Arrow, which rolls on mighty 25-inch wheels, is the contrast between classic shapes and materials as well as futuristic elements. Perfectly staged: the rose-golden spoke rims. Right next door: the record race car from 1938, with which Rudolf Caracciola set the record for eternity.

On the 18th hole of the golf course at Pebble Beach, as part of the Monterey Car Week, another legend entirely with a star on the radiator grille can be admired. The Mercedes-Benz 500 K Spezial-Roadster from 1935 was the super sports car of the rich and famous in its day. With a purchase price of 28,000 Reichsmarks, the open 2+2-seater cost just as much as a twelve-room villa in the capital Berlin did at the time.

The unique design makes it just as desirable today as it was back then. The luxury cabriolet is powered by a five-litre eight-cylinder engine, the performance of which has been increased with a compressor to 118 kW / 160 PS. Top speed: an amazing 160 km/h. Only a handful of these vehicles still exist in collectors’ garages around the world.


But the Monterey Car Week not only gets its unique charm thanks to luxury events around the Pebble Beach peninsula, the beautiful 17 Mile Drive or the classic races on the breathtaking Laguna Seca course. At events such as the Legends of Autobahn or the Concours de Lemons, car fans do not get any less of their money’s worth. Whilst, at the Legends of Autobahn at the Jack Nicklaus golf course, car enthusiasts of the Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz brands meet in a casual atmosphere and, more relaxed than ever, pay homage to examples of German automotive culture, hundreds of visitors flock to the Concours de Lemons in the park of neighbouring Seaside as a highly informal counter event to the Concours on the Sunday to admire the biggest pieces of junk on four wheels.

Highlights of the car week.

Over the past few years, the Legends of Autobahn event in particular, alongside the Carmel parade, the unofficial start of the Monterey Car Week, the classy event The Quail – a Motorsports Gathering – and the final Concours d’Elegance on the closing Sunday, has developed into one of the highlights of the car week. Fans from across the United States come, largely with their own automotive favourites, to the Carmel Valley. There are models to be adored such as a Mercedes-Benz S 123 in top condition alongside a W 124 in junk condition, which over its 826,000 kilometres has already explored a large part of the world – including water crossings in South America and mountain passes in Africa. Where else can you admire a Mercedes-Benz Pagoda with a 6.3-litre V8 or marvel at a mint condition W 126 luxury model?


All visitors have one thing in common: they love cars.

It is the broad spectrum that makes the events around Pebble Beach so unique. And whoever wants to expand their own fleet by one vehicle or another will also get their money’s worth in Pebble Beach. In parked cars on the roadside and at dealers in the surrounding area, there are hundreds of vehicles with for sale signs, be it classic motors or modern sports cars. However, what is more exciting than ever are the big auctions that take place throughout the week. Be it Mecum, Goodings or RM Auctions, classic cars worth millions or young classics worth seeing – here, too, the spectrum in Pebble Beach is broader than anywhere else in the world. All visitors have one thing in common: they love cars.
