Our highlights from the last 10 years at the Museum.

    2015: New visitor record.

A Stuttgart pensioner became visitor number 7,000,000 to the Mercedes-Benz Museum Rainer Krämer was the seven-millionth visitor to the Mercedes-Benz Museum, making him a lucky winner. The pensioner had taken his six-year-old grandson Dario to visit the Mercedes-Benz Museum with a view to “giving him a bit of a feel for all things automotive”.

    2015: Mercedes-Benz Museum staged the “auto”-biography of the C 111.

In its special exhibition “C 111 – timeless and visionary” the Mercedes-Benz Museum told the story of an exceptional superstar from the annals of automotive history. The Mercedes-Benz C 111 originated in 1969 as a highly innovative research vehicle to test the Wankel rotary engine as well as new lightweight construction materials. While the futuristic gullwing coupé with its distinctive paintwork never went into production, it nonetheless continues to delight people to this day with its fascinating design and the story of the speed records it set in the late 1970s. Nine vehicle exhibits, all in all, were used to define that particular era of history and bring the full story of the C 111 to life.

    2014: Stars & Cars.

The Stars & Cars event in November brought the successful motorsport season 2014 to a spectacular close. 50,000 fans came along to fete Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton and runner-up Nico Rosberg, along with other celebrity guests such as German national football team coach Joachim Löw and professional golfer Martin Kaymer. Enthusiastic fans were able to watch demonstration drives with current and historical Silver Arrows models on a 1.1-kilometre circuit around the museum. Lewis Hamilton’s winning vehicle was on display for all to see on the racing curve inside the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

    2013: Special S-Class exhibition.

In 2013, the spotlight was very much on the new S-Class from Mercedes-Benz: the latest-generation model had celebrated its world premiere just a few weeks previously. The special exhibition “Mercedes-Benz S-Class – always ahead of its time” at the Mercedes-Benz Museum presented the history of this very special model series in all its glory.

2012: “Mille Miglia – Passion and Rivalry”.

The Mercedes-Benz Museum made it possible for visitors to experience the Mille Miglia, Italy’s legendary 1000-mile road race, in Stuttgart. The special exhibition, “Mille Miglia – Passion and Rivalry” included some stunning racing sports car from Mercedes-Benz, along with their competitors from renowned Italian manufacturers. A total of nine vehicles were displayed.

2011: 125 Years of the Automobile.

The 125th anniversary of the automobile in 2011 was marked with a new display in Legend room 6 of the Mercedes-Benz Museum under the heading “New start – The Road to Emission-free Mobility”. A range of different drive systems – from the optimised combustion engine through to electric and hybrid systems and fuel-cells – are used to illustrate the challenges faced in the present day as well as in the future. Here visitors can find the answers to their questions about the drive technologies of tomorrow. The fuel cell in particular offers one of the most innovative forms of mobility.

2010: Super sports cars: Fascination in their genes.

Eight stunning super sports cars allowed visitors to the Mercedes-Benz Museum to experience a dream come true: the special exhibition celebrated the unique tradition of super sports cars at Mercedes-Benz. Among them of course, back then, the latest addition to the family, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

2009: A new Gullwing in the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

The Mercedes-Benz Museum added a further attraction to its riches: the new gullwing model, which had recently celebrated its world premiere at the IAA, was lifted by crane onto the museum’s roof terrace, 42 metres up. Over the course of two weeks, the sports car was viewed by more than 38,000 visitors.

    2008: Special exhibition S 400.

The Mercedes-Benz Museum presented a special exhibition “S400 BlueHYBRID”. The first Mercedes-Benz passenger car model to feature a hybrid drive system made its debut in the Mercedes-Benz Museum directly after its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show. Once launched, it became a major attraction in the Fascination of Technology section of the museum.

2007: The tornado – The very latest technology in the Museum.

Ensuring that all exhibits are seen in their best light is some very special lighting technology and a sophisticated lighting concept. The museum’s smoke elimination system is unique. Its design was based on the way a tornado works. In the event of a fire, 144 air jets in the walls of the atrium generate an artificial tornado, which is then discharged out over the roof via a fan at Level 8. This concept for smoke elimination, which is the only one of its kind in the world, was successfully demonstrated by the Mercedes-Benz Museum in a world record-breaking attempt in October 2007. It now has a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the “strongest artificially generated tornado in the world”.

    2006: Bambi Awards.

In 2006 the Mercedes-Benz Museum was the venue for the Bambi award ceremony. More than 800 prominent figures from the world of show business, politics, culture and industry trod their way up the red carpet in front of the museum.
