Mercedes-Benz Design Essentials Press Workshop 2017.

“Design Essentials” – behind the scenes of the Daimler design.

Design is one of the key success factors for Mercedes‑Benz and is cited ever more frequently as a key consideration in buying decisions.

Bipolarity of intelligence and emotion.

Design is one of the key success factors for Mercedes‑Benz and is cited ever more frequently as a key consideration in buying decisions – particularly among new customers. This is attributable in part to the brand’s shift from a traditional to a modern interpretation of luxury. The designers apply the design philosophy of Sensual Purity, which lends expression to the bipolarity of intelligence and emotion, to create products which are at once hot and cool. The press workshop “Design Essentials” is intended to convey what this means in concrete terms. This provides an in-depth look behind the scenes. In a relaxed atmosphere, the designers’ ideas and visions as well as the different design centres will be presented.

The art of omission.

The designers at Mercedes‑Benz are reconciling tradition and modernity in designing the cars for the future. With the “Aesthetics A” sculpture, the design team presents the vision of a saloon car in the compact car segment reduced to the basic body during the workshop. “In combination with perfect proportions and sensuous surface design, the coming generation of the compact class has the potential to herald a new design era,” says Chief Design Officer of Daimler AG, Gorden Wagener. “Design is also the art of omission: the days of creases are over.”

The secret of the success of the current Mercedes‑Benz design is the fusion of intelligence and emotion. Sensual Purity – with this strategy and philosophy, Mercedes‑Benz sparked a transformation in design whose influence reached beyond the brand itself.

Advanced Design Studios.

Advanced Exterior Design.

The designers of the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Exterior Design Studios devise cars for the future and therefore incorporate trends from other continents and cultures. Their brief is to pick up, analyse and apply stylistic trends at local level creatively. This involves intuitively picking up on developments which might be suitable for incorporation into timeless design. The Advanced Exterior Design Studios in Sindelfingen, Beijing and Sunnyvale provide input to drive the development of the design philosophy of Sensual Purity and to apply new design ideas with the aim of establishing trends which will continue to give a Mercedes‑Benz a sensual and aesthetic character in the future.

Exterior Design.

The Exterior Design team is responsible for the unique visual appearance of the Mercedes-Benz cars. At Mercedes-Benz Exterior Design, the shapes and proportions of all passenger car model series, from the A- to the S-Class, are created. Work begins in the conceptual phase with the first proportion studies and finishes with the formal release for production of the fully developed vehicle. The process encompasses every detail, such as headlamps and wheels, as well as different versions. Between these two points there lies an intensive interdisciplinary evolution process, with all specialist areas participating actively in development.

Interior Design.

Mercedes-Benz interior designers create and realise interior concepts for both series production vehicles and show cars as well as futuristic visions. Creative design concepts are conceived and implemented not only in Sindelfingen, but also by the Advanced Interieur Design Studio in Como. The designers are responsible for the entire process chain, from creation of the design through to finalisation of accurate data models and execution of series production vehicles.

“The bipolarity of traditional craftsmanship and hi-tech also forms the key focus of interior design at Mercedes‑Benz – the vehicles embody Sensual Purity in the interior as well and set benchmarks in precision and quality. Today, automotive interior design is about designing living environments. Mercedes‑Benz refers to it as designing of a ‘3rd place’ for customers, alongside the home and the workplace. Stimulating environments with a feel-good character,” says Gorden Wagener.
