Kai Sieber: Director Design Brands & Operations.
“No day is like the other”.
Which department do you head? Design Brands & Operations.
What are its main functions? My team and I design both Mercedes-Benz Vans, Trucks and Special Trucks (Unimog/ Econic) as well as the smart. We are also responsible for the design workshops as well as for many operational issues.
What is a typical working day like for you? My job is so varied that no day is like the other. My task is to put together the projects and their key parameters for my teams. That means intensive coordination with the relevant colleagues from marketing, development and planning. I also have to fix the budgets for projects or investments, for example for a new milling cutter. Yet I still find enough time to discuss the designs and models with the designers and, of course, with Gorden Wagener.
Inspired by raindrops.
Where does your enthusiasm for design come from? Even from a young age, I simply loved drawing and making things. Not just cars, but also houses, animals, plants – anything. Then, as a teenager, I also developed a passion for tools and technology. So it was only logical for me to go on to study technology and, later, design.
What do you like to do in your leisure time? Away from work, I enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities with my family. And I am still a very keen painter.
Where do you get your inspiration from? From everything! Exhibitions, movies, nature or simply the formation of raindrops on a window pane…
Who or what would you have liked to be? A car designer – I’m happy it worked out for me!
