Identify a vehicle by its number plate.

Vehicles operating in the logistics sector are often used by a series of drivers. The many different configurations and technical details of a truck mean that drivers have to examine each specific vehicle closely before setting off in order to familiarise themselves with the engine power and safety features of the one they are driving. Add to this the fact that both vehicle owners and drivers have a responsibility for the roadworthiness of the truck. Legally speaking, the truck driver must undertake a series of pre-departure checks before setting off – these include checking the lights, the tyres and, for example, the warning lamps. Very often employers expect drivers to check the vehicle for visible damage. All of which can be very time-consuming.

The app solution identifies the vehicle by its number plate and uses augmented reality to superimpose the relevant data. All the necessary information about the vehicle is clearly displayed on the driver’s smartphone, thus minimising the time required for the takeover checks. In addition, an integrated damage detection and reporting process allows both drivers and fleet managers to benefit from improved transparency regarding every aspect of the truck, thus also taking pressure off the driver.

Development phase.

Working together with the Berlin-based start-up company Everybag, Fleetboard has developed the Fleetboard app Vehicle Lens. The app uses live image recognition to identify the truck from its number plate. At each relevant point of the truck, relevant information is superimposed in a process of augmented reality, for example: current tyre pressure or wear data, information about engine mileage, the vehicle’s next scheduled workshop visit, the previous driver and his route, information about fuel level and information about the vehicle’s specification. To begin with, the focus will be on the visualisation of vehicle data, using information extracted from the Fleetboard system. In the longer term, it might be possible to show the load status of the trailer or to integrate the damage recognition and reporting process into the app.

The Fleetboard Vehicle Lens app is in the development phase at present and is being developed up to market readiness. The app is available for Android and iOS. The application will initially be available for Mercedes-Benz trucks, but could conceivably be extrapolated to vehicles of other brands.
