Drive 2 Climb K2: Topography of an Adventure.
All roads lead to K2.
Mike Horn is not a man to do things by halves. The daring sportsman set off from his home in Switzerland in mid-May for the first section of his adventure. Challenge number one: to drive all the way to Pakistan, home of K2, the world’s second-highest peak.
To do this, he is travelling overland through ten countries in a Mercedes-Benz G-Class, the high-performance off-road vehicle that Mike calls “the motorised version of me”. Not content with getting this far, he will then climb K2 before skiing down its technical faces.
The dream team.
Once they arrive in Pakistan, Mike and his team face one of the most difficult ascents on earth. We will be with him all the way, tracing the highs and lows of this intense and exhilarating ride. But first let’s reverse, back to the driving training at Biberach, Germany. Before the team began its journey, Mike got acquainted with the G-Class and its incredible limits. Roused by its performance, Mike soon realised that the vehicle would be a key part of his team, helping them to push on further and faster through demanding terrain.
A challenging commute.
“Let’s just say it’s a challenging commute to work”, says Mike. The high-performance G-Class was created to tackle the challenges of six continents, and has proven the perfect companion for this expedition across some of Europe´s and Asia’s most extreme topographies. After days of solid driving, the team arrived in Moscow, energised by the spectacular scenery they had been cruising through since Switzerland.
“Our backsides might be numb, but our minds are blown away by the thrill of such a new and exciting journey,” exclaimed Mike as they pulled into town.
Onwards through the heart of Russia, the team reflected on what they had seen and experienced so far. “On the rare breaks on our journey, we interacted with the locals and were greeted with overwhelming generosity and hospitality”. Touched by the open-hearted kindness of strangers, the team’s spirits were lifted as they powered southwards towards the Kazakh border.
The drama intensifies.
Having travelled through the great land masses of Russia and Kazakhstan, the team cuts through Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and China before arriving in Pakistan. As they approach their lofty destination, the route becomes ever more diverse and unpredictable.
Follow Mike and his team and find out how they approach the mighty K2, and embark on their heart-stopping ascent!
