Breathtaking peaks and peak performance.
Blue skies? Check. Camera equipment? Check. The new Mercedes-AMG C 63 Estate? All packed up and ready to go. Our Adriatic trip starts at the crack of dawn – heading from Austria to Slovenia, we leave the motorway for narrow gravel roads, slowly winding their way up the Alpine peaks. Following the sun, we savour the crisp mountain air while our high-performance companion whisks us past pristine mountain meadows, knotty olive trees and crystal clear lakes.

Fuel consumption combined: 8,6-8,4 l/100 km;
CO₂-emission combined: 200-196 g/km. *
The tranquil hamlets we spot on the way seem to be taking a collective siesta in the blistering mid-day heat. For a splash of refreshment, we seek out an enchanted waterfall, hidden away in a nearby ravine – the perfect private pool to enjoy Slovenia’s unspoilt beauty between light, shade and dolce vita.
Always on track.
The next morning’s wake-up call, at 5am, gives us a head-start for our trip to Croatia – and also wakes up half the locals when our powerful V8 leaves the village. By now, the grime and dust of our travels has left its mark on the stunning vehicle – but the nearest car wash won’t accept euros. German cleanliness? No problem thanks to the staff’s spontaneous assistance. With a huge smile, they hand us the service key. “It’s my holiday gift to you – just go ahead and clean that beautiful car!” A few hours later, we receive an equally heartfelt welcome at the hard-to-pronounce, but no less lovely island of Krk. The local harbour not only comes with prime swimming and dining spots, but also doubles as a fantastic backdrop for our four-wheeled companion.
Picture-perfect paradise. An entire album’s worth.
Although we would love to linger, Bella Italia is waiting. So, we stretch our legs on the ferry to Ancona and enjoy the gentle sea breeze and view. The colours! The light! Sometimes, life can be so simple. Beyond the railing, picturesque fishing villages, gleaming rocky deserts, craggy bays and palm-lined beach promenades catch the eye – and finally our port of call. Back in the car, our romantic route hugs the hills and takes us through historic old towns, past picture-perfect piazzas and along bone-shaking tracks riddled with potholes. Trailing the same course to Fabriano, Rimini Pesaro and Verona are several Mercedes-Benz fans who put their well-maintained 180 and 280 SL models through their paces on these precarious winding roads.
Well, our Adriatic adventures are certainly worth the effort and early start: After sun, sand, sea and cities, beautiful gorges and valleys reveal glimpses of Lake Garda, dotted with boats and ringed with mansions. Our final leg ends on a high, with challenging mountain passes, slicing through the jagged Dolomites. Panoramic views? Check. Thrills? Check. Impressions that will last us a lifetime? Firmly anchored in heart and mind.
