Trend watch: These are the latest health trends from L.A.

From active carbon to dream meditation and sober parties – the latest trends from across the pond.

In search of new trends.

When it comes to health and well-being, the stars in Hollywood often have the edge over us. At the end of the day, their appearance is their capital and this has to be preserved and cultivated. Trends from this world usually also make their way to Germany – albeit a little later. After all, what is good enough for the stars can’t be bad for us. Today we can reveal what new trends you will soon be able to discover from Berlin to Stuttgart.

Active carbon.

Active carbon in food and cosmetics.

Originally used as an adsorbent, active carbon is now also being used in drinks and cosmetic products. In medicine, the fine-grained carbon is used above all to treat cases of diarrhoea and poisoning, as it binds the toxins and helps excrete them via the stool. This binding property is now also being put to good use for increased well-being in non-medical applications. One thing you need to know about active carbon: it should not be taken together with other medication, as it can reduce their effects due to the aforementioned properties.

Drinks are taken black nowadays.

Up until now, green seemed to be the fashionable colour when it came to juices and smoothies, but in Los Angeles this trend is now being replaced by black drinks. When added to fresh juices or plant-based milks, active carbon powder is said to have a positive detoxifying effect on the body. The cosmetics industry has also followed suit in making use of the binding properties of medicinal charcoal: it can help give you whiter teeth when used in toothpaste, or clearer skin when used in face masks.

Ice cream as an Instagram star.

Black ice cream is all the rage in sunny California, as can be seen from the posts of numerous Instagram stars. In this case the active carbon is used for the unusual colour effect rather than any health benefits – and there doesn’t seem to be any negative effects in terms of the taste, although it does make the ice cream taste very sweet.

Dream meditation.

If your morning or evening meditation practice previously only required a comfortable mat and a few minutes of peace and quiet, the equipment required to practice dream meditation is somewhat more technical. This type of meditation is divided into four phases and initially involves getting comfortable in a special and particularly cosy armchair. Wearing headphones and virtual reality glasses, you take 45 minutes to enter a state in which you are awake just enough to perceive the images from the glasses, yet completely relaxed in order to sink into an extended state of consciousness called “Dream Reality”.

This new type of meditation is said to help you sleep better and get rid of recurring nightmares – but above all it promises, with regular practice, to make it easier for you to realise your own dreams and desires. The special purpose meditation studio “Dream Reality Cinema” in Beverly Hills has already found a large number of followers who regularly indulge in their lucid dreams.

Please stay sober.

“Sober is the new drunk” is the motto of a new movement which started in L.A. and is attracting more and more people in America’s major cities. Whereas in the past young people were generally seen as being particularly vulnerable to consuming large quantities of alcohol, it is now the millennials, the “Generation Y” born between 1980 and 2000, who prefer to stay sober when celebrating at parties.

Having fun without alcohol.

Pub crawls are being replaced by trips to the juice bar, and having fun at the weekend or after work no longer automatically goes hand in hand with drinking alcohol. The reason for this change, as with so many trends from California, is health-related: alcohol consumption is associated with cancer, weight gain and liver damage. To make sure it doesn’t come to that, an increasing number of people are refraining from drinking alcohol at social events where this would otherwise be the norm – and in L.A. this has even led to yet another new trend: the brewing of Kombucha, a drink made from fermented tea. By the way, you don’t have to be too strict with yourself in following these trends. Fresh green smoothies still are and will continue to be a very healthy option, your morning meditation routine in the bedroom will have a positive effect on your well-being even without virtual reality glasses and you can treat yourself to a glass of wine after work or on special occasions.
