Pascal Wehrlein has just made motorsport history by becoming the youngest driver ever to take the DTM title. A magnificent achievement that was made possible only by the combined effort of his team. Having now won ten drivers’ championships, Mercedes-Benz is the most successful brand in the DTM.

Pascal Wehrlein set new records in the DTM from day one. On his debut in the 2013 season, aged just 18, he was the youngest starter ever in the history of the popular touring car series. And that’s how things continued. In 2014 at the Lausitzring, he became the youngest DTM driver ever to secure pole position. One day later, he crowned his achievements with an outstanding performance, earning his place as the youngest winner of a race in DTM history at the age of 19. In difficult weather conditions, he led on every lap except one.
Wehrlein has now fulfilled his big ambition in his third DTM season. The Mercedes-AMG driver is the new 2015 DTM champion. The 20-year-old secured the championship title in his 37th DTM race by finishing 8th. So far this season, he has achieved two wins and five podiums and has scored points in 15 of the 17 races held so far, more than any other driver on the DTM grid. Following a successful career in karting, Wehrlein won the 2011 Formel ADAC and moved up into Formula 3 the following year. He finished second in the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2012 while still in his debut season and rounded off his season by winning the Rookie of the Year title. He joined the Mercedes-AMG DTM Team in 2013.
In addition to his duties in the DTM, Wehrlein has also played an important role in the Silver Arrows Formula 1 team over the past two seasons. He worked on the Race Support programme at MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS during 2014 and was also given his first test drive in a Formula 1 car just before clinching his first DTM victory at the Lausitzring. Wehrlein has accompanied the Formula 1 team as their official reserve driver since the 2014 Singapore Grand Prix.
Paul Di Resta, P4: “Firstly, congratulations to the team for what they’ve achieved. My qualifying was good, and I was up near the front. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the best of starts. After that, everybody just followed one another, but we have a very strong car and will be challenging for the front again tomorrow. If everything goes right, we’ve got the speed to win the race.”
Pressure fell away.
Pascal Wehrlein, P8: “You can’t be too pleased until you’re sure of the result. It’s all over very quickly especially in the DTM, but all the pressure fell away from me from after crossing the finish line. It’s just mega. Thanks to the whole team for their superb work this season.
I had a fast car today and was able to prove it as well towards the end of the race.”
Maximilian Götz, P10: “That was a great race, with Pascal winning the championship. I started from 17th on the grid and finished in tenth place. Unfortunately, Mattias Ekström managed to get past on the last lap, because I was
involved in a fight with Felix da Costa. But my race pace was good, and the team did a superb job. This was the third race in succession that I’ve finished in the points, and I’m especially pleased about that.”
Christian Vietoris, P12: “That was quite a decent race. I moved up to P12 from last position. It’s now important to secure a better grid position in tomorrow’s second race, and then we’ll be able to finish the season with a positive result.”
Daniel Juncadella, P13: “Well, that was an interesting race. I got off to a good start, but then a lot of things started happening. I managed to keep my cool and gained a few places. From P23 on the grid, it was always going to be difficult to get into the points today.
Now, we’re focusing on tomorrow.”
Lucas Auer, P17: “I crashed at the start, unfortunately, and my car was damaged after that. I continued in the race in order to gain experience. Qualifying went well today. We’ll have to repeat that tomorrow.”
Robert Wickens, retired: “I was stuck between two cars and broke the front diffuser on my car as a result. I couldn’t avoid the contact. I'm very sorry for what happened,
but as I've already said, it couldn't be helped. I had really bad problems with braking after that because of the damaged diffuser.”
Gary Paffett, retired: “I made a really good start. I got on the inside of Lucas going down the straight before Turn 1. I don’t know if someone shoved him, but he pushed me into the pit wall and damaged my car. After that, there was nothing I could do to defend myself against the other cars. Then Molina just took me out, which finished my race.”
Incredibly good season.

However, the season isn’t quite over, so we obviously won’t be downing tools yet. We’ll be giving it everything we’ve got again tomorrow, and celebrating afterwards.”
