“Of course this will be a very emotional occasion as it is the first Awards since the death of our patron, the great Nelson Mandela, and I am sure with the support of everyone in Kuala Lumpur it will be an Awards Ceremony to remember where we can salute today’s sporting heroes and pay tribute to President Mandela.”
At the first award ceremony for the Laureus World Sports Awards in 2000, President Mandela said: “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire, it has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. Sport can create hope, where once there was only despair.” This statement has become the Laureus mission.
The earnings from the Laureus World Sports Awards benefit the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and provide the basis for the Foundation's work which supports more than 140 social projects worldwide and has already improved the lives of more than 1.5 million children and young people.
With the help of sport, its mission is to overcome several of the greatest social problems which confront young people all over the world today. The winners of the Laureus World Sports Awards are chosen by the ultimate sports jury: living legends of sport honour the best athletes of the present day.
