Triathlete Sebastian Kienle cycles through a herd of cows on a glacial road.

Making of: “The Chase Down” – a pit stop for Sebastian Kienle.

While training in the Tyrolean Alps, triathlete Sebatian Kienle experiences an invasion of quite a special sort. This making-of video gives a behind the scenes look at how the film was made.

A pursuit in the Alps.

Triathlete and IRONMAN winner Sebastian Kienle is training in the Tyrolean Alps. While on course to conquer a glacial road on his racing bike, he hears the roar of engines behind him. Two black Mercedes-Benz V-Class are right on his tail. He looks behind him and increases speed, yet the vehicles close in on him, getting dangerously close, before overtaking him and stopping.

Masked men in racing suits jump out of the spacious vans. As if by clockwork, they service Kienle’s bicycle, dry off his goggles and indicate for him to continue before disappearing as quickly as they arrived, leaving the shocked and stunned athlete behind them … speechless and out of breath but freshly hydrated. Kienle has just been “pit-stopped” by Mercedes-Benz mechanics.

During a ride on his racing bike, Sebastian Kienle finds his way blocked by two Mercedes-Benz V-Class vehicles.

Expertise in motor sport redefined.

The idea for this unusual advertising spot came from the link between Mercedes-Benz enthusiasm for triathlon and the expertise of their racing car constructors. Their decades of experience are used to support top-level sportspeople from across the globe in a variety of areas.

A team of Mercedes AMG mechanics in racing suits service Sebastian Kienle and his bicycle.

Not only do they benefit from the technical expertise that Mercedes-Benz brings to the partnership, but also from the vehicles made available to assist them during their training and at competitions. Sebastian Kienle’s pit stop is a prime example of both these possibilities.

Just like Sebastian Kienle, the two Mercedes-Benz V-Class AMG Line vehicles have no trouble negotiating the tough conditions on the bumpy road. The professional precision drivers stop right in front of Kienle, the vehicles occupied by a team of race mechanics and laden with their tools.

High performance on the Kaunertal Glacier.

Filming for the advert with Sebastian Kienle takes place right at the foot of the Kaunertal glacier in North Tyrol, Austria. This place is just 160 km to the west of Zell am See, where Kienle came second in the 2015 middle distance IRONMAN world championship. On a closed road, at an altitude of between 1,500 and 2,000 m, the omnipresent mountain fog follows the production team. Above the tree line, the landscape becomes barren and surreal, the air is remarkably thin. Pursued by a camera car, Sebastian Kienle easily makes his way up the glacial road. For experienced athletes like him, these hostile conditions are no big deal – he’s currently in training for the IRONMAN world championship in Hawaii and is in top form.

The chase continues.

The mechanics are taking their mobile pit lane on quite a tour! After servicing Sebastian Kienle, they appear behind Anja Beranek, another triathlete, who is training in the Black Forest. Their mission is also to make her preparations for Hawaii that much easier. Who will they stop and help next?
