Rovaniemi – Milan. From the Arctic Circle to the fashion capital.
After its long, strenuous journey right through Europe, the CapaCity L has finally arrived somewhere where it can show its strengths and finally prove its worth. Although Europe’s longest articulated bus with only one joint did that a long time ago with a spectacular performance in Rovaniemi, Finland. Even on the test track specially designed for large commercial vehicles, in icy Lapland, the 21-meter leviathan was a real highlight – even for experienced test engineers. Because although the handling track in Rovaniemi is especially adapted to the size and particular requirements of commercial vehicles, it is nevertheless impressive with what agility the CapaCity L manoeuvres along the snow-covered lanes. Thanks to the electro-hydraulically steered fourth trailing axle, the rear end stoically follows the cab. The new CapaCity L is just as confident as the previous figurehead in the portfolio of Mercedes-Benz Buses.
And the Citaro G, which it exceeds by almost three metres. And it is longer by another metre and a half than the model before that. That is an increase in length that means it can transport an extremely high number of passengers, and enables a really fast flow of passengers embarking and disembarking – up to five double-width doors make that possible. And just by the way, Mercedes-Benz has set yet another new standard with its unique ATC (Articulated Turntable Controller): the hydraulic damping of the articulated turntable reacts quickly and above all when and where it is needed, regardless of the steering angle, the angle of the joint, the speed or the load. The effect: the CapaCity L with its small, only 24.47 metre turning circle, performs almost like a solo vehicle. Particularly in crowded, busy city traffic, the agile giant shows its full strength – making it the ideal vehicle for BRT routes.
But more than its impressive presence: the CapaCity L has reason to be grateful for its size – it can boast seating space for 191 passengers in the standard specification bus. A direct consequence: with the tried, tested and recognised highly efficient drive components of the Citaro G, the Euro VI six-cylinder in-line Mercedes-Benz OM 470 engine with 10.7 l displacement and 265 kW (360 hp) or 290 kW (394 hp) output, the CapaCity L is a truly shining model of efficiency. No diesel-powered town bus uses less fuel per passenger than this new large capacity bus does. A number of highly developed efficiency technologies, such as efficient auxiliary consumers or the unique recuperation module – a sort of additional short-term electricity storage device in addition to the batteries of the on-board electrical system – contribute to the outstanding fuel efficiency of the CapaCity L. The new CapaCity L. More space for the city. Capacity: maximised. Emissions: minimised.
Mercedes-Benz buses are prime examples of progress, efficiency and economy. That is why the CapaCity L was the largest (but not the only) world premiere at the 2015 UITP Congress. With the new M 936 G natural gas engine, Mercedes-Benz sets standards of environmental friendliness because its CO2 eco balance is over 20 percent better than that of a diesel engine. Through the use of biogas, the CO2 balance is even more attractive.
Then natural gas bus travel is almost CO2-neutral. The consequence from the steady, successful progress and development of the drive systems of Mercedes-Benz buses: we will skip the transitional technology of the diesel electric fully hybrid drive. Parallel to further improvement of the diesel engine, the next step will be a fully electrically-powered town bus: the Citaro E-CELL will sport a battery-electric drive and the Citaro F-CELL will be powered using a fuel-cell technology.
