During the design and development of the A 45 AMG, the experts at AMG were able to draw on decades of experience in motorsport and the production of powerful, high-performance cars. This means that the A 45 AMG will likewise have the DNA typical of AMG and embody perfectly the AMG brand claim of “Driving Performance”: an exciting and sporty driving experience combined with impressive craftsmanship and distinctive individuality. The A 45 AMG is an agile high-performance car aimed at a mainly urban-based target group. Mercedes-AMG caters for this group’s technology-oriented and individual attitude to life with an extremely wide range of equipment options, colours and materials.

The newly developed AMG 2.0-litre turbocharged engine is the world’s most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder unit in series production. Its high output and torque yield combine with performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive to deliver extremely dynamic results: the A 45 AMG accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, and has a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). The dedicated AMG engine also impresses with exemplary efficiency.

With an NEDC fuel consumption of 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres, the A 45 AMG likewise takes the lead in its segment. It also excels with particularly low exhaust emissions.
These impressive figures are made possible by a high-tech package put together by Mercedes-AMG. As a high-performance unit within the BlueDIRECT family of engines, the AMG 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine features spray-guided direct petrol injection using piezo injectors. Other highlights include an all-aluminium crankcase, a weight-optimised crank assembly, generator management and an ECO start/stop function. Mercedes-AMG overcomes the inherent difficulty in obtaining high responsiveness from smaller turbocharged engines by using a twinscroll turbocharger, maximum dethrottling of the exhaust system and an innovative injection strategy. As a welcome side-effect, fuel consumption and exhaust emissions likewise benefit from this twinscroll technology. With its maximum charge pressure of 1.8 bar, the AMG 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine also leads the field in this respect.

The standard AMG sports exhaust system with its striking twin tailpipes produces a sonorous and distinctive sound signature under strong acceleration.
Thrilling sound signature.
The AMG sports exhaust system features large pipe cross-sections and an automatically controlled exhaust flap. This technology, already familiar from the SLK 55 AMG, reconciles the conflicting aims of a dynamic driving experience and the long-distance comfort for which Mercedes-Benz is known. The flap is variably actuated by characteristic mapping, depending on the driver’s performance requirement, the engine load and the engine speed. As an option the A 45 AMG is also available with an AMG Performance exhaust system featuring an exhaust flap and tailpipes in a specific design. In this case the driver experiences an even more emotionally charged and exciting sound signature under acceleration and during gearshifts. With the AMG Performance exhaust system, it is specifically the double-declutch function during downshifts and the retarding of ignition and injection during upshifts under full load that make for an even more throaty sound.
Fast gear changes.
A dual clutch transmission and all-wheel drive – the powertrain of the new A 45 AMG thrills with its sheer engineering expertise. Inspired by the power transmission of the SLS AMG super sports car, major software modules have been adopted. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission has seven gears, three modes, a double-declutch function and RACE START.
The great strengths of this dual clutch transmission include fast gear changes with no loss of tractive power, a high level of smoothness and efficiency. Shift times in Manual 'M' mode and in Sport 'S' mode are at a similar level to those of the SLS AMG GT.
Performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive.
The new A 45 AMG is equipped with variable, performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive as standard. The focus during its design and development was on the key terms of “Performance” and “Dynamism”. To ensure a favourable weight distribution, an electrohydraulically controlled multi-disc clutch forms a unit with the rear differential. The multi-disc clutch recognises slip occurring at the front axle. Almost instantly, and barely perceptible by the driver, engine torque is transferred to the rear wheels as required. In the interests of optimum efficiency, the A 45 AMG has front-wheel drive during normal operation. When the driving dynamics require it, the variable AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive distributes the drive torque between the front and rear axles up to a ratio of 50:50 percent.
AMG sports suspension.
As an exclusive technical highlight, the AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive interacts with the 3-stage ESP® and ESP® Cornering Assist. Using the three ESP® stages, the driver is able to vary the dynamics of the A 45 AMG individually at the touch of a button. This is perfectly complemented by ESP® Cornering Assist: when cornering at speed, imperceptible braking intervention at one of the inside wheels produces a defined yawing motion around the vertical axis, causing the A 45 AMG to enter bends precisely and controllably at all times. Like every AMG high-performance car, the new A 45 AMG has highly sophisticated axle technology. The AMG sports suspension with specifically configured spring/damper units and larger stabilisers ensures high lateral acceleration and reduced body roll on fast alternating bends.

High steering precision and agility is also made possible by the electromechanical, speed-sensitive AMG sports steering with its AMG-specific, speed-dependent servo assistance and a constant steering ratio.
With exclusive features such as the sports seats with excellent lateral support, the A 45 AMG confirms that it is a true AMG.
Dynamism and exclusivity in design and appointments.
Mercedes-AMG supplements the emotional design of the new A-Class with decidedly sporty and muscular features. A dynamic appearance is ensured e.g. by the striking “Twin Blade” radiator grille, the black flics on the large cooling air intakes in the sides and the “TURBO AMG” lettering on the front wings. In the interior, the new A 45 AMG likewise impresses with the dynamism and exclusivity that are hallmarks of Mercedes-AMG. The sports seats with red contrasting topstitching, the multifunction sports steering wheel with shift paddles and the AMG DRIVE UNIT set new standards in both visual appeal and quality. The AMG instrument cluster keeps the driver informed with a central colour display and the RACETIMER. All of which makes the A 45 AMG unmistakably a high-performance car – a true AMG.
