Pamela Amann is a pioneer. She competed in the legendary Mille Miglia rally with an all-woman team. Also, she was a project manager for the development of the Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet and drove it for the entire rally.

A thousand special miles.

“The Mille Miglia is cult, the G-Class is cult,” says Pamela Amann, “so what could be more natural than introducing them to each other?” From Brescia via Padua, Rome, Parma and back to Brescia: that’s the traditional race route past breathtaking scenery and through idyllic towns. For Amann and her teammates, the joy was the mixture of motor racing with the motoring journey: “It’s a race, and you participate to win, of course. But in this race, all the things surrounding it are just as important.” Each of the thousand miles became an exquisite speciality. Particularly in the Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet.

The love of the tifosi.

Italian enthusiasm is legendary. But the unbounded admiration that greeted the She’s Mercedes pilots who competed in the Mille Miglia, Pamela Amann and the others, was something quite extraordinary. “The people were so fascinated by the Gs that even when we were just going to the rest rooms we had to run the gauntlet of admiring tifosi.” The biggest fan turned out to be a young man who arrived at the starting point at four in the morning and has been sending fan mail to the G-Class team almost every week ever since.

“One highlight we experienced was away from the Mille Miglia,” says Pamela Amann as she looks back. Between the heats an SLR team challenged them to a race, and they agreed. You’d have thought they had no chance at all, but the G-Class managed an unexpected coup: they came to a big bump in the road, so the SLR was forced to brake. Pamela Amann seized the moment to overtake, applauded by onlookers. “When,” said the G-Class driver, “could a G ever manage to get ahead of an SLR?”
