Winter sports with the G 63 AMG.
When Mercedes-Benz first unveiled the G-Class to the public over 30 years ago, the thoroughbred off-roader received much praise for its off-road capability and robust design. That said, the original “G”, as fans around the world soon began to call it, could hardly be described as sporty or comfortable. Over the past three decades, however, the G-Class has been transformed – although its original off-road strengths still remain. One of the key milestones during this remarkable rise to cultmobile status was laid back in 1979 when AMG unveiled the first sporty variant of the G-Class. Ever since its inception, AMG has focussed on developing powerful drive systems displaying the high quality standards readily associated with Mercedes-Benz.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has become a cultmobile over the course of the past 30-plus years.
Today the G 63 AMG and the 12-cylinder G 65 AMG are among the most powerful models in the off-roader segment.
The eight-cylinder biturbo engine generating 544 hp (400 kW), already a proven performer in other AMG models, promises no end of forwards thrust in the Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG.
V8 Biturbo, 544 HP, 760 NM and four sidepipes.
The latest version of the off-road classic with distinctly sporty genes features the eight-cylinder biturbo engine that has proven so highly effective in other AMG models. With a displacement of 5.5 litres, the state-of-the-art power plant with direct petrol injection generates an impressive 544 hp (400 kW) and colossal torque of 760 Nm from just 2000 rpm.
As if drawing extra strength from the hallmark AMG V8 sound produced by two twin tailpipes located ahead of the rear wheels on each side of the vehicle, the G 63 AMG races from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds.
The Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG offers driving enjoyment and safety.
Driving enjoyment with vision.
Getting the power to the wheels is the job of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission, which changes between the seven gears almost imperceptibly. Alternatively, gear changes can be triggered using the shift paddles on the steering wheel. Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach has also adapted the chassis so that it can handle the extra power: permanent all-wheel drive makes for the best possible traction in any situation. The G 63 AMG handles extremely well for a vehicle of this calibre, racing through corners with poise and assurance, even at higher speeds. Fade-resistant high-performance brakes with ventilated and perforated brake discs all round – 37.5 cm with six-piston fixed callipers at the front – ensure vehement deceleration that can be controlled effectively. On top of this, the standard-fit Brake Assist increases the pressure in the brake lines during emergency braking.
Efficient and safe.
The latest-generation G-Class models, including the G 63 AMG, boast further features designed to enhance safety. By way of example, the luxury off-roader is equipped with completely retuned ESP® which, together with start-off assist and the HOLD function, assists the driver on uphill gradients. Customers who choose the optional trailer coupling can specify ESP® trailer stabilisation for safer towing. Optional safety features that are new on board include DISTRONIC PLUS, Blind Spot Assist and the PARKTRONIC parking aid with reversing camera. At least equally as impressive as the extensive safety equipment and the outstanding performance is the fuel consumption compared to the predecessor model, which has fallen by 2.1 litres to 13.8 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC figures).
The Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG likewise leads by example when it comes to safety features, fuel efficiency and compliance with strict emission standards.
This lower figure is largely attributable to the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission, the alternator management and the ECO start/stop system. Furthermore, state-of-the-art catalytic converter technology in the AMG sports exhaust system ensures that the G 63 AMG meets the EU5+ emission standards.
The G 63 AMG boasts a high-quality, spacious and sophisticated interior.
Like the exterior, the spacious interior incorporates sophisticated details without breaking with G-Class tradition. New features include instruments unique to AMG, a newly designed centre console and the COMAND Online system with a large colour display and a DVD changer.
Certain familiar aspects remain, of course: the spacious interior offering plenty of headroom and the overriding impression of quality in the cockpit courtesy of the designo piano lacquer trim and the designo leather appointments.
The Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG combines excellent ride comfort and outstanding performance on the road with legendary G-Class off-road capability.
The best of both worlds.
The G 63 AMG gives its occupants an exceptional feeling of wellbeing thanks to smoother roadholding, fewer vibrations and a lower noise level. The off-roader offers impressive ride comfort all round, even on long trips. There are almost no limits to the robust off-roader’s capabilities thanks to its high ground clearance and a permanent all-wheel-drive system complete with differential locks and a low-range ratio. Forest trails covered in deep snow are negotiated with ease. Even the G 63 AMG is and remains a G-Class – albeit an extra-special one.
