Energy and serenity: Sonni Hönscheid about the sea, art and her V-Class.

Sonni Hönscheid is Germany’s most successful surfer and a remarkable artist. She has been influencing the German stand up paddling scene for years. With Mercedes-Benz and her bright V-Class, she pursues her passion both privately and in terms of her sport.

An artistic class of her own.

Life on Fuerteventura, Maui and Sylt. Travelling around the globe, following her own instinct. Sonni Hönscheid grew up on some of the world’s most stunning beaches. Born on Sylt, Germany’s most successful surfer, three-time world champion in stand up paddling (SUP) and a notable artist, Sonni Hönscheid combines her work and lifestyle like no other athlete. As a new brand ambassador for the V-Class, she radiates a likeable down-to-earthness and is full of enthusiasm for what she does: “As an athlete and artist, style and functionality are very important to me. To me, the V-Class is a perfect combination of both. No route is too far and no surf board is too long.”

Addicted to saltwater.

“I’m addicted to saltwater,” she smiles. Because of her father’s windsurfing career, the family moved to Fuerteventura in 1986. There she learned to ride the waves. At five years of age, her career was predestined. She soon took part in and won competitions in the South of France. The following years brought her to events in South America, South Africa and Europe with the German national team. And her family was never far.

Sonni sits on the beach on Sylt and looks out to sea. One of her illustrations appears out of the waves.

To date, she carries twelve German championship titles. She has also been very successful in windsurfing. So when Sonni says she’s addicted to saltwater, you can believe her. A day without the sea simply doesn’t happen.

SUP and the V-Class – buoyancy and drive.

Sonni’s need for storage space has increased over the last few years. In addition to her equipment for surfing, windsurfing and long boarding, she also needs more space for her latest passion: stand up paddling. No need to start feeling claustrophobic: The V-Class provides enough space and flexibility for all types of occasions. On the roof or on the fold-down seats, there’s room for everything. Hönscheid’s entire family can set off, comfortably accommodated on the back seats, to a relaxed SUP session. And Sonni appreciates variability when she’s SUP surfing too: “You can really push your limits – and go beyond them. I really feel alive when I’m on my board.” The experienced athlete knows how challenging the Hawaiian sport can be.

In her element.

The best SUP surfers compete against each other on Hawaii at the “Molokai2Oahu” (M2O). The race goes through the so-called Ka’iwi Channel (aka the Channel of Bones). Treacherous currents, crosswinds and all kinds of sea animals present considerable danger. This year, Sonni Hönscheid won the race for the third time in succession. She managed the 41-km stretch in just five hours.

What Sonni Hönscheid holds a fascination for is what most people find simply terrifying. Alone on the open sea, surrounded by giant waves. For Sonni this represents freedom: “You can really move from island to island under your own power.”

There is no other vehicle that would credit her art as well as this one. Sonni’s illustrations merge with the elegant shapes of the V-Class and meet at the bow. It’s definitely got the wow factor, says Sonni.

Art and waves.

Sonni Hönscheid is fascinated by waves. Well, of course she is! But to her, waves are not simply a mass of water, but central to her life. Cast your eyes over Sonni’s art, and you glide from one twist and turn to the next. In flow and harmony, always brightly coloured and detailed, the undulating worlds in Sonni’s life ebb and flow and intertwine. The breathtaking land and seascapes on Hawaii, the invigorating North Sea and the sand desert of Fuerteventura. Always searching for a perfect wave – both as an athlete and an artist. The perfectly rounded curves of the V-Class are something Sonni likes, too.

Perfect balance at the beach.

Sonni Hönscheid likes to let the day come to an end at the beach. It gives her energy and serenity. The beach has always been her greatest source of inspiration. She discovered SUP here, when she was out on the water with her father. The view of Lobos Island from Fuerteventura aroused her artistic instinct. Sport and art necessitate each other. And the beach is where these two antipodes meet. Against the backdrop of a breathtaking sunset, Sonni sketches a new picture. She is totally focused, as if she were keeping a diary. When she’s finished, she leans back and waits until the sun has completely disappeared into the sea. Tomorrow she’ll dive back into the waves.
