Functional and perfect: The design of the new Sprinter.

In keeping with the philosophy of “sensual purity”, the design of the Sprinter strikes a balance between fascinating design and practical functionality.

The balance between form and function.

For more than two decades, the Sprinter has been the flagship of the Mercedes-Benz Vans family. During the design process, it was essential to maintain both the van’s striking exterior and its practical functionality. According to Kai Sieber, the Design Manager at Mercedes-Benz Vans, there were two key aspects: “The ‘cold’ part is rational and expresses the fact that a commercial vehicle primarily has to be functional, reflected by its ergonomic interior.”

The “warm” part addresses the emotional level and creates an emotional connection to the vehicle. As such, the Sprinter is convincing beyond its pure function as a van. “We want to appeal to our customers’ hearts”, explains Sieber.

The new Sprinter reflects “sensual purity”.

According to Andy Sugata from Design Brands, the greatest challenge was transferring the design philosophy of “sensual purity” to the Sprinter as a commercial vehicle. The art? Combining functionality with form, says Andy Sugata. The grouping of the individual functions through a control element in the control cladding creates a clearly structured interior and is a world first in the van sector, combining all of the functions in a single module.

In future, users no longer have to spend time searching for switches or knobs. “The balance between luxury, user-friendliness, comfort and professionalism defines the design of the new Sprinter generation”, says Andy Sugata.
