The Vito 4x4 turns resolutely onto a narrow trail. The steep gravel path is a synch for the van that belongs to the Austrian Alpine Association. The fact that gravel and stones are gradually covered by uncontrolled growth is not a problem for the Mercedes-Benz van. For the Alpine Association’s nature lovers, who, equipped with their spades and shovels, reforest the protection forest up here on North Tyrol’s Obernberg with countless seedlings, the Vito 4x4 is the perfect all-wheel drive to take care of their important tasks: avalanche protection and stabilising the ecosystem.

Mercedes-Benz vans perform brilliantly and not just on tarmac. Snow, gravel, sand or even mud are no obstacle to the all-wheel transporters.

In the 3,000 soul community of Sölden, the Unimog snowploughs are clearing the streets. The morning sun is gradually climbing over the peaks of the “BIG 3”. That’s what the three-thousanders, Gaislachkogl (3,058 metres), Tiefenbachkogl (3,250 metres) and Schwarze Schneide (3,340 metres) are called here in the Austrian Ötztal Alps. When the phone rings in the alert center in Linz, responses must be swift. But the terrain in this area of Hinterschiffl is extremely challenging: the paths wind up and down and are rough and stony. The Unimog – an exceptional talent for extreme situations.

We’ve now come to a legend among all-wheel vehicles: the Unimog. It’s unstoppable taking its driver through mud, water, over rocks and even up the steepest of inclines. No wonder that to date some 400,000 vehicles of 30 series have been sold. There are now two types of Unimog: the equipment carrier and the highly off-roadable vehicle.

The beehives at this English company are sometimes located up to five miles from the road on the North York moors. Only a very few vehicles can make it there. A vehicle that can master any terrain can sometimes be a lifesaver: the closer the rescue teams get to the scene of the accident, the greater the chances of survival of the missing people. For this reason, the rescuers of the German Life Saving Organisation (DLRG) in Stadthagen have opted for two Unimog 1300 as their rescue vehicles. The Unimog as a lifesaver in Madagascar.

Virtually no infrastructure. Instead, bumpy roads that are closed down due to huge waterways during the rainy season: for the paramedics of the hospital, Hopitaly Zoara in the southwest of Madagascar, it was always difficult to reach the remote villages in this poor region. 4 Angaben zu Kraftstoffverbrauch, Stromverbrauch und CO₂-Emissionen sind vorläufig und wurden vom Technischen Dienst für das Zertifizierungsverfahren nach Maßgabe des WLTP-Prüfverfahrens ermittelt und in NEFZ-Werte korreliert. Eine EG-Typgenehmigung und Konformitätsbescheinigung mit amtlichen Werten liegen noch nicht vor. Abweichungen zwischen den Angaben und den amtlichen Werten sind möglich.
