Potatoes – home-grown.

Sensually steaming in a delectable interplay of light and shade, larger than life and printed on prestigious black wood – this is how enticing a potato welcomes visitors to the headquarters of the company Hans Willi Böhmer Verpackung und Vertrieb GmbH & Co. KG near Mönchengladbach, Germany. Whoever walks through the stylish passages equipped with premium materials cannot help noticing that Kartoffel-Böhmer (Potato Böhmer), as the company is known locally, is a highly professional organisation: “There is so much know-how and highly specialised technology in marketing potatoes and onions these days that we also want to convey this externally,” explains Frank Zimmermann, Managing Director of the company’s subsidiary Böhmer Transport.

The premium commitment to the company’s own merchandise is intended to be reflected in the plant and equipment at its five German locations, in innovative marketing, but also in terms of the fleet of 42 trucks chiefly consisting of Actros vehicles. Just how serious Böhmer’s mission is became evident in the year 2010. Until then, the company had outsourced all transport assignments to external service providers. Then, by establishing Böhmer Transport GmbH, the company built a forwarding agency of its own, using a shiny Actros fleet to deliver fruit and vegetables. “We also wanted to boost the firm’s image with visually appealing vehicles,” Zimmermann recalls.

Besides, customers were to be offered a full, all-in care-free package, with all services from a single source. “That’s why we decided to simply try this out.”

Focus on safety.

The concept worked like a charm: “Suddenly, not only did we have a presence of our own on the road, with vehicles sporting the Böhmer design; we also had much better access to the entire process chain, which has also had a sustainably positive impact on economy,” says Zimmermann in summing up. As far as the drivers are concerned, Böhmer Transport GmbH assigns top priority to comfortable fittings and high-level safety equipment featured in the vehicles. “All trucks – most of them with a GigaSpace drivers’ cabin – feature the complete, top range of equipment available, including stationary air-conditioning and all safety systems such as Active Brake Assist 3, Proximity Control Assist and Lane Keeping Assist.”

Sheer driving pleasure.

“Road safety is important to us, and the Actros is an absolute winner in fulfilling this aspect. This enables us to create an incentive to boost the drivers’ willingness to perform, to work also on weekends and bank holidays so that the potatoes and onions are out there on those supermarket shelves when the new week begins.” Peter Müller (58) is one of the drivers who really appreciate this – he has been with Böhmer Transport for two years now: “It certainly is an absolute pleasure to drive a vehicle like this. In particular, Proximity Control Assist makes work a great deal easier.”
