Saving resources: Economic driving.

Apart from technological parameters, such as engine output, weight and aerodynamics, the human behind the wheel is the main factor influencing fuel consumption. Brisk, moderate acceleration, driving at a steady speed at low rpm as well as anticipatory driving and braking have a positive effect while ensuring lower fuel consumption and, therefore, reduced CO2 emissions. Other key factors with an influence on fuel consumption are heating, air conditioning, entertainment and other comfort/convenience functions. The added weight of passengers or luggage as well as low tyre pressure increase the rolling resistance and therefore the power needed to accelerate the vehicle and maintain a steady speed.


Environmental driving style.

Fuel consumption is affected by a host of physical parameters, some of which can be influenced before and during a journey. Drag is reduced by optimised aerodynamics. Without roof luggage (roof rack) or a bicycle rack as well as by driving at low speed, it is possible to reduce drag. Just like tyre pressure and payload, speed has an effect on rolling resistance. Increased energy efficiency is made possible by driving in a high gear at a low engine speed as well as by high-torque engines, which remove the need for frequent gear changes. Losses caused by braking and inertia can be avoided by driving at a steady speed and with anticipation.


More efficient driving: The ECO display.

An energy-efficient driving style can reduce fuel consumption by up to 30 %. The animated ECO display in the multifunction display motivates the driver to save fuel with a differentiated analysis of the driving style for the three driving phases “acceleration”, “driving at steady speed” and “coasting”. If the driver endeavours to drive at a steady speed, accelerates moderately and lets the car coast instead of braking, the green bars in the display rise to indicate high energy efficiency. On the other hand, heavy acceleration, variations in speed and frequent braking have a negative effect. The indicated percentage figure tells the driver how much saving potential they have already utilised.
