With a lot of spirit through Amsterdam.

Amsterdam – the major Dutch city conjures up images of idyllic canals, countless cyclists and a laid-back atmosphere. All things that guest author Florian Roser could experience at his stop of the #UrbanDiscovery road trip across Europe. But what about Amsterdam’s modern side? What drives the people here and what special tales are there to be told?

#UrbanDiscovery – The third stage with the CLA 250 Coupé (C 117) starts in Amsterdam.

CLA 250 Coupé: Fuel consumption combined: 6.6–5.8 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 153–136 g/km.*

Here prevails creative spirit.

Nalden, one of the first and most successful bloggers in Holland, co-founder of WeTransfer, with roots in Amsterdam gives the first insights into this special city. We met up with the hi-tech entrepreneur at the futuristic Eye building at Oeverpark, one of his favourite spots in Amsterdam. The creative spirit that prevails here is evident in the look of the people and the small but hiply designed houses. On the other side of the Noordzeekanaal, and thoroughly appealing in its own way, the skyline of the IJdok area beckons – and this is what makes Amsterdam so special: how the future meets the past in the present, and not only in its architecture.

Amsterdam at night during the #UrbanDiscovery.

Eventful evening in Amsterdam.

Even a young, dynamic internet star needs a bit of peace and so Nalden invited us on an outing to Durgerdam. This sleepy little place which would make a beautiful backdrop for a film enchanted us at once, and makes for a perfect retreat directly outside Amsterdam. Apple cake and lemonade at the waterside are a sure-fire recipe to dispel all your cares!

But enough of the rural idyll. A road trip crew of young creatives is naturally drawn to the world’s major cities. And so, after another eventful evening between a hip restaurant at the port and romantically illuminated pedestrian bridges over the canals, the next morning we moved on to what is surely Europe’s most happening capital: Berlin.

Hitting the German Autobahn at last.

While the alpine roads between Milan and Paris were definitely a thrilling experience in the dynamic CLA, the entire crew was nevertheless looking forward to the moment after passing the German-Dutch border when the famous white sign with the diagonal black lines would appear.

Finally the top-speed capabilities of the stylish four-door coupé could be put to the test. We thus proceeded briskly to Berlin, where the next creative sector awaited us in picture-perfect weather.

7 days, 5 cities: A road trip in the new Mercedes-Benz CLA!

Guest article: #UrbanDiscovery – 7 days, 5 cities.

A road trip in the new Mercedes-Benz CLA.
Text: Willy Iffland

Interesting tour across the continent.

Fashion capital Milan, cosmopolitan Paris, tranquil Antwerp, incredibly beautiful Amsterdam and Berlin – my adopted home city of many years’ standing. These 5 major cities were stops on a little trip across the continent. Together with a number of other influencers, I was invited by Mercedes-Benz to take part in an #UrbanDiscovery road trip.

An interesting tour across the continent.

The means of transport for this trip was the driving force behind the whole affair: We duly took up in a brand spanking new Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupé and an equally mint Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake.

Point of interest: Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 Sport 4MATIC Shooting Brake.

CLA 250 Sport 4MATIC Shooting Brake: Fuel consumption combined: 6.9 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 160 g/km.*

A proper appearance.

I didn’t think twice when asked whether I wanted to be part of the trip. Let’s face it, who in their right mind would pass by such a one-off chance and miss out on such a great experience? I’m glad I took up the offer – each day of our little road trip really was unique, and I had the chance to get to know the cities we visited in a special way that would not have been possible otherwise.

Regrettably, my schedule didn't allow me time to travel to Milan, so I was only able to join up with the merry band of travellers at the second stop in Paris. Despite my tardy arrival, I was greeted with a warm welcome from my esteemed and familiar colleagues. But my attention turned first of all to the main points of interest: the Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupé and the Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake – our wheels for the trip.

Stylish set on wheels: Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupé during the #UrbanDiscovery road trip.

Stylish set on wheels.

As a self-proclaimed connoisseur of all things automotive, I must say that the world-class calibre of both cars was apparent as soon as I climbed aboard and found myself in an ultra-stylish interior with all the refinements you could wish for. Being tall, I sometimes find it difficult getting comfortable in a car – no danger of that in this lavish number!

Then the actual proceedings got underway – our drive to the next stopover in Antwerp. I hadn’t realised what petrol-heads the French are – we were the centre of attention in our stylish conveyances as we made our way through the streets of the French capital. It is true to say that we frequently found ourselves the focus of admiring attention in the course of our trip – and I’m sure it wasn’t the vehicle’s occupants that had people transfixed.

Lifestyle from close up.

So on we went – safely, comfortably and incredibly speedily to Antwerp. And my first visit to this dreamy port will definitely not be my last: beautiful architecture, relaxed people, great food. Belgium’s second-largest city is a true delight.

The same goes for Amsterdam: Our visit to the city with its plethora of waterways was blessed with the most radiant sunshine, and anyone who has had the pleasure of sipping their afternoon coffee at the canals understands what makes this city one of the most beautiful on the whole continent.

Design-oriented and fashion conscious: Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupé during the #UrbanDiscovery road trip.

Design-oriented and fashion conscious.

The fashion-conscious and design-oriented people made a particular impression on me – after all, I consider myself to be of their ilk. As such, I was thrilled by the accompanying programme. Rather than just ushering us along from one city to the next, Mercedes-Benz granted us an insight into the development of a sporty car. Regrettably, the trip came to a premature end for me in Amsterdam, as I had work commitments elsewhere. I took my leave of my fellow travellers with plenty of great memories accompanied by a tinge of melancholy – if I had had my way, the trip could have gone on for ever.

#UrbanDiscovery. Memories for life with CLA Shooting Brake and CLA Coupé.

Guest article: #UrbanDiscovery – Memories for life.

With CLA und CLA Shooting Brake from Milan to Paris.
Text: Zaid Hamid

Memories and stories for everyone.

Making memories is what I live for and there is nothing more special than sharing them with those around me. Stories made with people that the audience have never met, countries foreign as well as those I consider home. There is nothing I want to do more than invite people in to view the show reels of my memories, something that social media has revolutionised. Mercedes-Benz is unique in a number of ways, but there is one particular reason why I have such a soft spot for the brand. They want to make memories that we can share across the world so millions of you can share these moments.

#UrbanDiscovery: In July automotive and beauty bloggers met in Milan to go on a very special roadtrip.

What memories? And who are “we”? The answer, in this instance, is the #UrbanDiscovery roadtrip and a collection of unique individuals that all create memories and share them with the masses.

The #UrbanDiscovery roadtrip starts with Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupé and CLA Shooting Brake in Milan.

A special kind of road trip.

In July, a handful of beauty and automotive bloggers such as myself, Zaid Hamid – editor at GTspirit.com, gathered in Milan to embark not only a roadtrip, but a journey of creating memories and sharing moments with millions across the globe. The cars we would be using were CLA Coupé and CLA Shooting Brake – no surprise given their nimble handling traits and slender dimensions that suited #UrbanDiscovery in cities such as Milan, combined with the luxury and comfort that are desired for such long journeys.

Having greeted my fellow participants, many of whom I have previously had the pleasure of completing other MB roadtrips with, it was time to leave Milan. The city is alive, famous for its narrow streets lined with beautiful architectural marvels such as Piazza Duomo, home to a Mercedes me store, as well as dozens of fashion icons including Prada. Switzerland beckoned, more specifically, the natural beauty of the Alps.

Driving pleasure at highest level.

A couple of hours and espressi later, we crossed the Swiss border. Immediately the scenery became more dramatic. As we peeled off the smooth silk of the tarmac and started to ascend up steep narrow mountain passes, the car started to prove just how well it could handle hairpins and harsh gradients as well as it did pot holes and parallel parking in an urban environment. The prescribed route was astonishing, the views were unbelievable, complimented by waterfalls and dramatic jagged cliff faces.

Stopping for lunch under the immense heat of the sun still taken aback by the views and the competency of the CLA 250 Sport 4MATIC Shooting Brake, it became apparent that this was not a day that I would forget anytime soon. However much I would have liked to dwell on the contrast of the day’s scenery and sip Swiss apple juice, we had another country to reach before the day was done – France.

With the remarkably refined CLA 250 4MATIC you reach the French border very quick.

Brilliant car for a road trip.

Just a couple of hundred kilometres away was the French border which was a breeze to reach in the remarkably refined CLA 250 4MATIC. Another great feature of the CLA, which comes courtesy of its elegant design, is the absence of almost any wind noise. The sleek lines of the car result in a segment leading drag coefficient that allows the car to cut through the air when cruising. Paired with the quality of the cabin and technology such as DISTRONIC PLUS cruise control the CLA, once again, proved itself as a brilliant car for such a journey.

Cappuccino, cheese and lots of hp.

Milan seemed a distant memory as we entered the third country of the day. Gelato and Cappuccino had been swapped for cheese and baguettes as we neared our destination for the evening, Beaune. Having arrived in the capital of the Burgundy region ahead of schedule, we had the opportunity to explore the walled town famous for its wineries and 15th century architecture. In the evening we were joined by a special guest, a futurist and specialist in luxury, who discussed with us how the concept of luxury changed in the past and how Mercedes-Benz anticipates the perception of luxury in the future.

Ice cream, cappuccino, cheese and lots of hp. On the way to Beaune with the CLA 250 4MATIC.
If ever a car could be said to be wearing a tuxedo, it would be the CLA Shooting Brake.

All’s well that ends well.

All good things must come to an end and #UrbanDiscovery was a very good thing. I was somewhat looking forward to the final evening of the roadtrip as the destination was, like the city where we had started our journey, a fashion capital and icon of the world – Paris. Travelling from the south to almost northern France would be the longest leg of the trip. As a result, I opted to swap the matte silver CLA for a smart looking CLA Shooting Brake. If ever a car could be said to be wearing a tuxedo, this would be it. The added space of the Shooting Brake was a very welcome addition, the CLA has a reasonable amount of rear space, but the Shooting Brake had that little bit more … that I immediately filled with chocolate bars and fizzy drinks – road trip fuel.

Paris is a city that is constantly buzzing. They say New York is the city that never sleeps but Paris is not far off. In such a busy city, it was great to see that the sharp lines and unique design of the CLA and CLA Shooting Brake still managed to turn heads. Past Louis Vuitton and Goyard stores, the CLA felt at home in such esteemed company.

Memories for life.

From one urban environment to another, across three countries with dozens of coffees in between, the CLA never felt out of its depth. We discovered corners of Milan that I had never previously seen, then climbed up and back down then Alps onto endless highways and into yet another urban environment with such ease and enjoyment.

It was here at the final destination for the cars that #UrbanDiscovery began to mean something to me as a participant. Many reels of memories will continue to play in my mind for years to come. Behind each one I will remember that the Mercedes-Benz CLA made it all possible.

Memories for life – The Mercedes-Benz CLA was there to make it all possible.

Update for the designer gems by Mercedes-Benz: a facelift hones the design of the CLA and CLA Shooting Brake.

Even more dynamic design.

The sporty, expressive design of the CLA and CLA Shooting Brake is now being honed still further in a facelift involving new bumpers, a diamond radiator grille in black as standard and new light-alloy wheels. The interior also benefits from numerous enhancements, among them new seat covers and trim parts, as well as chrome-plated controls. LED High Performance headlamps, HANDS-FREE ACCESS and further possibilities for integrating smartphones into the control system are all options that serve to enhance safety and comfort. The facelifted version of the CLA Coupé will make its debut at the New York International Auto Show, while the modified CLA Shooting Brake will be launched to the public on the occasion of the awards ceremony for the Laureus World Sports Awards in Berlin.

Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake (X 117): While frameless windows give the car the character of a coupé, it also offers the versatility and practicality of an estate car.

Unmistakable proportions.

Their sporty proportions and powerful, dynamic design language characterised by sensuously rounded contours make the CLA and CLA Shooting Brake quite unmistakable. In addition, the CLA Shooting Brake offers a concept that is unique in this class of vehicle: while certain styling elements, such as frameless windows, give the car the character of a coupé, it also offers the versatility and practicality of an estate car. In undertaking the facelift modifications, the Mercedes-Benz designers have subtly honed the distinctive look of the CLA and CLA Shooting Brake. All models now have a diamond radiator grille in black as standard, plus a new front bumper with a silver, black or chrome trim strip. The rear bumper is optionally available with a panel incorporating a trim strip in chrome or black (Night package) between the tailpipes. The tailpipe trim panels themselves are now integrated flush into the bumper. This adds visual width to the vehicle and ensures a superior high-quality appearance thanks to even and narrow gaps where the panels join.

Adjustable vehicle characteristics.

Both the CLA and the CLA Shooting Brake already previously included the latest generation of assistance and safety systems that are, in some cases, only now gradually being introduced in the other model series. Among these are, for example, Active Brake Assist as standard (previously known as COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS), which is able to trigger autonomous braking as a means of reducing the danger of rear-end collisions, as well as the transmission mode selection function DYNAMIC SELECT.

Both the Mercedes-Benz CLA and the CLA Shooting Brake (BR 117) already previously included the latest generation of assistance and safety systems.

With this system the vehicle characteristics can be adjusted at the touch of a button, as the system modifies the engine, transmission and steering at the driver's behest.

The interior: Attention to detail.

The interior also benefits from features such as new seat covers and trim parts, as well as chrome-plated controls. The highlight here is a much slimmer-looking freestanding 20.3 cm (8-inch) media display with a new-style glass cover as well as the ambient lighting system, which can be individualised by setting any one of twelve colour moods. The new-style dials and red needles in the instrument cluster make it easier to read the instruments. Meticulous attention to detail is also evident from the silver chrome finish to the controls and to the fascia and switches in the doors for the electrically adjustable seats, as well as from the chrome surround to the stowage compartment in the centre console.

Low energy consumption thanks to LED technology.

Both the CLA and the CLA Shooting Brake are optionally fitted with LED High Performance headlamps. Their colour temperature is closer to that of daylight than xenon headlamps, for example. This is more restful to the eyes and therefore provides relief to the driver at night. The 34-watt LED low-beam headlamps also have very low energy consumption – around 60 percent less than xenon and around 70 percent less than halogen. The low-beam headlamps use LED projection technology, while the main-beam headlamps use LED reflection technology. Direction indicators, daytime running lamps and position lights are in the form of multifunctional fibre-optic cables, which are also used for the “Coming Home” function. As all lights use LED technology, there is never a need to change a bulb over the entire service life of the vehicle.

Avant-garde meets Driving Performance.

“Avant-garde meets Driving Performance” is the motto for the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 4MATIC and CLA 45 4MATIC Shooting Brake models. These two cars offer a unique combination of a fascinatingly sporty driving experience, extravagant design and maximum individuality, while also benefiting from the facelift modifications. The aerodynamics have been further improved and the cd value reduced, all to the benefit of the driving dynamics and stability.

In the case of the Coupé for example, the design of the AMG spoiler lip on the boot lid is new. Further exterior features of the facelift include the AMG front apron in a new A-wing design with front splitter inserts in matt titanium grey and high-gloss black flics. The interior has been similarly upgraded. The instrument panel is upholstered as standard in ARTICO man-made leather, as are the beltlines. Both are given an exclusive finishing touch of red contrasting topstitching.
