A hat maker with a passion.

Steam rises into the air in a small workshop in Los Angeles. The chatter of a sewing machine fills the room. Nick Fouquet creates truly exceptional hats. Using traditional methods combined with high quality materials, the Franco-American hat maker creates headwear of every type and for every occasion. “Hats actually suit everyone, you simply need to own the look”, he says with conviction. Although he rarely goes anywhere without a hat on his head today, Nick originally had no interest at all in this traditional craft. His journey to California was filled with diversions and reversals.

Nick Fouquet stands in a square surrounded by old buildings and throws his hat into the air.

Between the metropolis and the desert.

The Franko-American has a long and winding road behind him, but his history is not something you notice. With passion and incredible skill, Nick Fouquet not only shapes hats in demand worldwide, but also his own path in life. He has just taken an inspirational journey through Europe where he explored the most beautiful landscapes and exciting cities in the new Marco Polo.

From Patagonia to down under.

When Nick was eight years old, his family emigrated from southern France to Florida, turning his life upside down. Since then, nothing in Nick’s life has had a precise plan: his turbulent time at school was followed by a five-month journey through Patagonia. He then studied environmental science in Australia and travelled to many places throughout the world. Yet the wanderer had to find his true calling. In the course of his search, he came to realise that he had spent so long constantly travelling. To find himself, he needed to change direction.

An expert craftsman.

In sunny Los Angeles, Nick shows us how he creates his works of art, transforming simple felt into incredible hats coveted by wealthy celebrities. Selecting the colour is the first step and then the felt is treated with steam. This process loosens up the material, enabling Nick to form the felt into the right shape. Whether fedora, top hat or bowler hat – Nick does not limit his creativity to any one type of hat.

He has a broad portfolio with numerous colours, materials and shapes. “I knew absolutely nothing about hats before I met my mentor”, admits Nick. His encounter with his mentor was a life changing experience. The traditional art of hat making was exactly what he had been searching for: his calling.

Fire and flame.

To make the hats even more unique, they are briefly set on fire. Every time, this creates a hat unlike any other in the world. “You never know how it will turn out and that is the exciting thing”, says Nick, explaining the technique where the hats are set on fire for a few moments to create small scorch marks and discolourations.

The hat maker to the stars.

The basketball player, LeBron James, the model, Cara Delevingne and the musician, Bono, are only a few of Nick Fouquet’s enthusiastic customers. The unique look and quality of the hats are not their only distinguishing features. Every hat features a single matchstick, representing the fire. What began as a special request from a customer has become Nick’s unmistakable brand mark over time.

A close bond with nature.

Nick has forged a unique bond with nature on his travels through South America, Africa, Asia and Europe. Feeling the earth between his fingers and escaping from his hectic daily schedule is an important aspect of his life. We meet the hat maker with his new Marco Polo at a beach in Spain. The hot sand reveals a piece of nature which Nick collects. Without any hesitation, he takes off his hat and inserts the striped feather that he has just discovered into the straw-coloured hat band.

Independent and free in the new Marco Polo.

Moments like these make Nick aware of just how much the traditional art of hat making connects him with nature. Night has shrouded the elegant, deep blue Marco Polo in darkness. The only sound is the crackling of the campfire which Nick has built a few metres away from the vehicle. Focused and lost in his thoughts, he stares into the dancing flames. A few hours have passed, the fire is out and Nick retired to the peaceful roof bed of the new Marco Polo for the night.

Make your Move.

Despite his odysseys around the world, despite his diversions and all of the changes, Nick Fouquet has found his calling. From worldwide wanderer to student to hat maker. “You cannot find yourself when you are running from life. You only find yourself when you feel life.”

Nick passes on these words along with the admission that he spent a long time heading in the wrong direction. In the end, it does not matter how you find yourself or where. What counts is taking your own path and discovering yourself along the way. Like Nick Fouquet, go your own way. Make your Move.
