113 kilometres of iron willpower lay between the starting gun and the finish line. The race began with a 1.9 kilometre swim through Lake Zell, followed by 90 kilometres of cycling along a challenging route with an altitude difference of 1,288 metres. The 21.1 kilometre run along Lake Zell completed the route. The race covers a total distance of 70.3 miles, giving the series its name. Jan Frodeno, the winner at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, was the fastest over the distance and took the World Champion title ahead of Sebastian Kienle.
