With "Concept EQ", Mercedes-Benz is showing that the electric car will soon be moving into the fast lane. The concept vehicle which has the looks of a sporty new SUV coupé provides an outlook into a new generation of battery-powered vehicles.

With "Concept EQ", Mercedes-Benz is showing that the electric car will soon be moving into the fast lane. The concept vehicle which has the looks of a sporty new SUV coupé provides an outlook into a new generation of battery-powered vehicles.

The dynamically designed exterior, with its new electro-look, highlights the focus on the powerful e-drive: two electric motors, whose performance can be increased to 300 kW thanks to the vehicle's scalable battery components, and permanent four-wheel drive allow a dynamic driving performance.
As a result, the SUV is able to reach the 100 km/h speed mark in under 5 seconds. With the help of its sophisticated operating strategy, the concept vehicle has a range of up to 500 kilometres.

The battery, which has a total capacity of over 70 kWh, is charged quickly and efficiently thanks to state-of-the-art charging technologies. The EQ show car can be charged at home by means of induction or a wallbox and is suitable for fast charging with the combined charging system (CCS). The charging capacity currently ranges from 50 kW to sometimes 150 kW. The goal is for the European charging standard to reach up to 300 kW in the medium to long term. This would mean that it would take ten minutes to recharge sufficient electricity for 100 km.
It is also helpful for the driver to receive notifications of nearby charging points. As soon as the EQ notices that it will not be able to reach its destination with the available battery power, it informs the driver about suitable charging options by displaying them on the navigation map, which has a highly detailed 3D city view.

Design with a new electro-look

The new electro-look is shaped by a smooth transition from the glowing black bonnet across the windscreen to the darkly tinted panoramic roof – an exciting contrast to its alubeam silver paintwork. The joints in the vehicle body are hardly noticeable and windscreen wipers hidden; cameras are installed rather than outside mirrors, and the car does not have the traditional door handles – all elements designed to emphasize its sleek, dynamic silhouette.

A glance into the interior reveals a driver-oriented cockpit with a large 24-inch wide-screen display that appears to be floating. It is operated with touch-based controls. The concept vehicle has therefore moved on from the control logic in today's vehicles, providing a peek into the future of what the experts call "user interaction."

New design highlights can also be found in the interior. For instance, the vehicle has four individual seats. The reduced volume, impression of floating and avant-garde seat upholstery give it an appearance of lightness. Speakers are integrated into the head restraints, ensuring a customized sound experience. The bolster cushions are trimmed in pure-white leather. The perforations in a pixel-rain look reveal a view of particles in rose gold.

The electric vehicle architecture has been custom-developed for battery-electric models. It is scalable in every respect and can be implemented across all models. The wheelbase, track width and all other system components – in particular, the batteries – are variable thanks to the modular system design. The vehicle concept is optimized to meet all requirements of a family of battery-electric models. The basic architecture is suitable for SUVs, limousines, coupés, cabriolets and other model series.
